Been watching a ton of your videos. This is a great one! I'll be working on this every day for a while.

I started playing drums 1.5 years ago. At first I was only playing metal stuff (double bass, blast beats etc 200+ bpms). But after reaching my goals I couldn't really proceed further, I felt limited. A couple of months ago I started my jazz journey. I changed to a traditional grip, tried to learn rudiments etc. I realised early on how much there is left for me to learn. Your lessons on traditional grip helped me a lot. My hand would probably be really hurt by now if I didn't see your video where you explained how using only your thumb can be risky. Please don't stop uploading videos, I need them 😂

Dig Robs cymbal set up.
Practical tactical.
Perfect height and reach just like the angles of his toms and snare.
And his tuning is flawless.
Funky, groovey...
Deep and rich.

Fantastic Beatdown in taking an idea and simplifying it -- killer lesson.

I’ve supported you on Patreon for about 4 or 5 years, and you have taught me so much, I’m almost 72 now and still progressing with all your rudiment practices & drills, How to set up my kit, to maximum Thumpification😜 I just wish I had started much much earlier😔 But Thank You Rob, you make it fun🙏🏻💙👏🏻🤘🏻

It's always a great learning opportunity with Downtown Rob Brown! Love it!

I learned this by accident decades ago when I would do a fill with my right hand while ghosting the left hand. Yes, the foot is really important. Thanks.

Been playing Bass/ guitar and song writing for 40 yrs. But started playing drums 2 months ago. I LOVE this guy. Already purchased my snare drum upgrades. This guy is a Beast.

Rob, I'm even watching your videos, when I'm familiar with the lessons, advises or tips and already can play them, cause the way you're playing and presenting those is a absolute fabulous and very tasteful. I also love that you're teaching the students how to become a better musical drummer instead of overpowering with cold technique. Great to have good people out there talking about good things in a good way. That's exactly what our world needs rhe most. By the way, on May 28, 2025 we painfully lost the great Al Foster, known from his many years as Miles Davis' favourite drummer. I met Al theee times, he was a fantastic guy. And he was the best example of a musical drummer with big ears.

Always good info...

i was just thinking about this. you read my mind man. i’ve been playing 20 years and still feel like i get lost when im doing longer fills or improv stuff. i get stuck in some kinda accented triplet run or the same fill vibe or some familiar rudiments and seem to never leave that realm. and 80% of the time i got no idea where to interject my foot aside from cymbal hits lol.

it usually feels okay and i try to play to the song best i can but ive always wondered how people know what to do when they flow for a long time. i appreciate the video and ideas sir:

Thanks Mr. Brown great stuff as usual.

Love this method. Super tricky for open handed drummers like myself since my lead hand is on the hats. I guess I could just ghost note the hats instead of the snare and add some cool texture to the groove.
