Gradius Gaiden (グラディウス外伝)
System & Settings: PlayStation 1, Hardest Difficulty

Well, here it is, a 4-loop clear of Gradius Gaiden on real PS1 hardware! I believe Loop 4 is where the game reaches max difficulty. It's similar to loop 3 but there are even more suicide bullets from certain enemies, and they also appear to move faster.

Loop 2: Gradius Gaiden (PS1) Full Run (Loop 2) on ...
Loop 3: Gradius Gaiden (PS1) Full Run (Loop 3) on ...
Loop 5: Gradius Gaiden (PS1) Partial Run (Loop 5) ...

No emulators, cheats, hacks, or any of that crap was used in this video.

- Hey, you can reorder the powerup bars in Gradius Gaiden!
- Yeah, but how can that be possibly useful?
- Hold my beer...

This and Gradius V are the only games in the series with mostly natural sounding voice overs.

Man, forgot how smooth, clean, fast, and colorful those graphics are. Seriously, this game is just great to look at.

None of my videos are tool-assisted or use emulators in any way. All my playthroughs are done on real hardware.

A great run! I wish I knew about this combo and strategy when I played on Loop 0 Normal! Shame about the amount of dislikes; guess this wasn't the gameplay people were expecting.

This game is a bonafide masterpiece.

The 2nd stage, MOIA stage & Event Horizon is the best stage in this Gradius.

Emulated the game for about 2 years as it and Gradius 4 at the time were almost taboo to me, couldn't play them as I had no real way to do so (nor knew of their existence). Eventually picked this one up on PS1, and then the double pack on PS2 that has 3 and 4 on it, problem solved. This one floored me as it didn't quite do the Gradius traditions the normal way, the Moai had new attacks, the volcanic level was no longer volcanic, and a black hole was eating the level up right behind you due to a gravity bend. The speed stage was also different as didn't really have the choose your own path vibe to it, not to mention it was in the last stage, only Gradius 3 arcade was sort of similar, but that speed stage was after the last boss, and quite short. SNES Gradius 3's speed stage seemed directly lifted from Gradius II.

I remember playing this a decade ago and still remember how busted the Limit shield is regardless of loop. The ability to protect you from anything for three seconds gives me the opportunity to be aggressive against bosses. And the power meter positioning helped a lot!
