Gavin is a total sleeper build. He's great at articulating these fact better than most. This man is a treasure for us Protestants.

Great ep.! Also, love your new set up. Looks great...and you're in full frame!

Thank you for your videos Gavin! I have recently been getting a lot of ecclesial angst, but your videos have been crucial in giving me assurance that I'm in Jesus' care. :)

So what i find interesting is in the RC is that marriage is a sacrament, but the RC also forbids their clergy from taking part in that sacrament.

Already know this is going to be a banger Gavin!

If we could integrate the best of Roman Catholicism, Orthodoxy, and Protestantism, and demote the non-biblical doctrines to secondary statues, what a glorious Church we would have. But therein lies the rub: the argument over biblical superiority in doctrine and practice.

I was just thinking about this the other day! God’s timing is great :)

Amazing work Dr. Gavin. God bless.

Ortlund is such a gift

This is a very helpful video. I'm thankful that in addition to your other material, you continue to help us understand why people should choose to be Protestant (I would say, more specifically, theologically conservative, evangelical, Protestant) instead of Roman Catholic or Eastern Orthodox. The last week or so I have been communicating with another brother in Christ who is considering leaving the Protestant church and becoming RC or EO. Material like this helps me (and, I, pray, people like this brother I mentioned) a lot!

Gavin you give a great framework for understanding church history. Thank you for all you do ❤

Fascinating video Dr Ortlund.  Makes me think also of the toxic Purity Culture Movement amongst US Evangelicals.

Great in depth video and for me a clear addition to Gods word through tradition. This should give Catholic food for thought as you said Dr Ortlund how the church functions on the ground.

When I was researching examples of infant baptisms in the early centuries, I was amazed at how many church fathers came from clerical families and were only baptized as adults, e.g. the Capadocian fathers.

The principle is clear: what God has permitted, the Church cannot prohibit. Conversely, what God has prohibited, the Church cannot permit. Kudos to Dr Ortlund for another fantastic video.

It’s fascinating and I thank you for sharing your thoughts.  It was excellent.

I found these quotations quite surprising. The presence (prevalance?) of what are clearly not biblical or apostolic teachings or practises is a reminder that closeness to the ancient eras does not necessarily mean closeness to the biblical truth. I'm reminded of CS Lewis when he said that every era has its blindspots. This was true for all eras including the apostolic, patristic, medieval onwards.

1 Timothy 3:2-5
Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him, and he must do so in a manner worthy of full[a] respect. (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?)

Hi Gavin, you make some good points here. As an Orthodox Christian, I do think priests and deacons should be able to get married, and I am not personally opposed to bishops marrying either. You are also right to point out the tendency to view marriage with skepticism and as a lesser state before the reformation. I think Catholicism and Orthodoxy are both wrestling with that issue today, largely because of very valid protestant critiques.
Personally, I don't have any issues with bishops being celibate, nor do I necessarily see requiring it as a violation of anything laid out in scripture, as Saint Paul doesn't explicitly condemn requiring clergy to be celibate, but rather heretical (likely gnostic) groups who say that no one should marry. I'm also coming at this from a non-sola scriptura angle, and one that sees the question of marital restrictions on clergy as being more of an authoritative thing rather than an infallibility thing.

Deacons are allowed to have wives in the RC…
