Why do so many ambitious African projects struggle, stall or completely disappear?
Akon has raised a painful question about Africa’s economic future.
The global superstar and entrepreneur has repeatedly encouraged Africans—especially the diaspora—to invest across African borders, build businesses, create jobs and keep more African wealth circulating within the continent.
But Akon has also spoken about something many entrepreneurs know too well: the difficulties of navigating government systems, bureaucracy, regulations, financing and delays when trying to build major projects in Africa.
His own ambitious Akon City project in Senegal became a powerful example of how difficult it can be to turn a massive African vision into reality.
And this raises an uncomfortable question:
If wealthy and internationally connected Africans can struggle to execute major projects, what happens to the ordinary young African entrepreneur with a brilliant idea but limited money and connections?
Africa does not lack ideas.
Africa does not lack resources.
Africa does not lack ambitious people.
But are our systems helping Africans build—or standing in their way?
This conversation is bigger than Akon City. It is about creating an Africa where Africans and the diaspora can invest, innovate, build industries and create opportunities without unnecessary obstacles.
🌍 What do you think is the biggest reason African projects fail?
Government bureaucracy? Corruption? Financing? Poor planning? Lack of infrastructure? Or something deeper?
