The Last Supper is one of Leonardo da Vinci's most famous works and a masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance. Da Vinci painted this fresco between 1495 and 1498, commissioned by Ludovico il Moro, for the refectory of the monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan. The work measures approximately 460 x 880 cm.

Against the usual fresco method, da Vinci painted on dry plaster, using a technique known as "a secco". By combining tempera and oil, he attempted to work more slowly, refine details, and create finer shades of light and shadow; but this experiment quickly caused the colors to peel and fade.

In this video, we explore the story of the creation of The Last Supper, its unique composition, the different reactions of the apostles, and the details and symbols of this masterpiece, and see why this painting, despite its damaged condition, is still considered one of the most influential works in the history of art.
