It stood between the Twin Towers.
Then September 11, 2001 changed everything around it.
But somehow, The Sphere survived.
Created by German sculptor Fritz Koenig, the massive bronze sculpture once stood at the center of the World Trade Center plaza in New York City.
For decades, thousands of people walked past it on their way to work.
Then the Twin Towers collapsed.
The World Trade Center plaza disappeared beneath an enormous field of debris.
And buried within the destruction was The Sphere.
When it was recovered, the sculpture was badly damaged — dented, torn and scarred — but much of it remained intact.
That created an extraordinary question:
Why wasn't it repaired?
Why would New York preserve the damage instead of restoring the sculpture to the way it looked before September 11?
In this special episode of VERADEPTH, we follow the story of The Sphere from the original World Trade Center plaza, through the destruction of 9/11, its recovery from Ground Zero, and its life as one of the most unusual surviving physical witnesses to that day.
But The Sphere is only the beginning.
Because once we start looking closely at modern Ground Zero, other physical traces of September 11 begin to appear.
A tree recovered severely damaged from the site survived and grew again.
Original structural elements remain beneath modern New York.
Parts of the foundations of the World Trade Center still exist underground.
And deep below the surface, a massive engineering structure built before the Twin Towers even opened survived their destruction.
Twenty-five years later, Lower Manhattan has been rebuilt.
One World Trade Center rises above the skyline.
Trains run beneath Ground Zero.
Trees grow around the memorial.
Millions of people continue moving through New York.
But pieces of September 11 are still there.
Some are obvious.
Others are hidden in plain sight.
And The Sphere may be one of the most remarkable of them all.
Because repairing every wound would have returned the sculpture closer to what it once was.
Leaving the scars tells another story:
what it survived.
So why was The Sphere never made whole again?
And how much of September 11 still physically remains at Ground Zero today?
VERADEPTH investigates the evidence — from the surface of a damaged bronze sculpture to the foundations and bedrock beneath Lower Manhattan.
Because sometimes history isn't hidden in an archive.
Sometimes it is standing directly in front of us.
We just don't know what we're looking at.
