They really did a splendid job in building Tarlos relationship. Carlos handled the fight in father arrest better to calm Tk down and Tk handled this fire scene better to calm Carlos down. They showed their relationship/dependance not to be one-sided, they need each other just as much and that makes Tarlos a very compatible couple. Bravo!
As a retired police officer, let me say, this is totally legit. As policemen, we think we are the anointed heroic protectors of all. For us - our loved ones - to be victims, and in a situation where we cannot rescue or force our way to victory and safety is humiliating, emasculating, and gut wrenching. Carlos, a police officer, was just in a situation where he could not protect the man he loved, and he saw death. But first, he saw death coming and knew he could not fight it, or even sacrificing himself to protect TK.
I sobbed a bit myself here.

I love how Carlos let his guard down and his emotion out in this scene. The love between these two is so amazing to watch on screen. You can see how much they love each other.
Carlos is simply the kind of man who doesn't tolerate the idea of not being able to protect his partner from absolutely everything. He is an extremely protective lover. Coming head-on with the reality that we can't always keep the loved one out of harm's way is so against his nature that it makes him break down in tears. He feels terrified, helpless and when the fright wears off a bit he will discover that he is furious too. I would not want to be in the shoes of the arsonist at that time. (I clarify that I made this comment before seeing the full chapter but now that I have done it I will not correct it so as not to spoil it)
Another thing is...T.K. knows what it's like to be in a fire and knows how to handle it but Carlos doesn't and that's what makes it hurt so much 🏳️🌈💔💯💖
Carlos apologizing for not having an extinguisher in the bedroom is a bit heartbreaking because 1) most people don’t even have an extinguisher in their house or even know how to use them if they do and 2) TK is the firefighter / paramedic who you would have thought would have insisted on getting an extinguisher for the upstairs when he moved in if he felt it was necessary.
this scene was so hard to watch but i didn't see that 'I love you, too' coming from TK. Carlos' breakdown was also painful like literally his eyes says everything; the terror and fear he felt that moment was unbearable and im crying so hard
I think Carlos breaking down and crying in TK's arms, apart from being a nice change of pace (it's usually Carlos who is protective of TK), also reflects his conservative background as opposed to TK's liberal background and how that shapes their behavior. Carlos, while out and proud, still feels the need to conform to gender roles by being traditionally masculine, the protector, so he's devastated that he couldn't do anything to protect himself or TK during the fire. The fact that he's a cop only exacerbates it, as he's protecting people every day. TK doesn't feel the same pressure to be the "macho man" so whenever he's been in peril, like getting shot or being kidnapped and bashed in the head with the gun, it was easier for him (even though these are awful traumatic experiences). For Carlos this is the first time he felt helpless and needed others to save him, and that shakes him to his core.
"carlos...how are you doing...?" "i'm good" you can see that he isn't okay, you can see the vulnerability in his eyes, when i watched this episode this was the part that made me cry.
TK's look away at 1:53 deserves more credit. I'm by nature very sarcastic, and sharp when I comes to my bf of 2 years emotions, and TK's move in that moment after Carlos said he's fine, is definitely something I do irl! That part of the scene realistically depicts an extremely in-tune couple, where one partner can tell that the other is giving a BS answer, not to be dishonest, but rather to make light of serious situation. There are times you just let it slide, and other times, like what happened in this episode, you calmly but noticably call out the BS so that the real emotions can flow, and the healing can begin.
Loving someone unconditionally is knowing when a little tough love is needed, and being confident enough in your bond and understanding of each other, to know that your partner will correctly see your tough love for what it is and not be offended or become defensive.
