I have one of each, a 44 mag in a Winchester model 94, and a 45-70 in a Winchester model 1895, and am happy with them both.

One is a designed rifle / carbine round. The other a designed revolver round. Both are Extremely effective utilizing its design purpose.

Did anybody notice that the bullet is standing up in the forty five seventy category is not a forty five seventy?

I’ve never seen it as which one should I own, owning both is better. Both rounds are very versatile.

I have both 1894 Marlin Classic in .44 mag & 1895 Marlin Trapper in .45-70. I handload hard cast for both calibers and both are kick ass Leverguns.

I'm a 444 marlin man myself.

I will say this is spot on.  I love both, and u derstand application means more than personal preference.

Any idea how much recoil 45-70 has with black powder?

I have shot both and on both and I never thought the recoil was bad on either one

Hmmm...my Marlin 1894 has a noticeable kick with 240g bullets. The rifle is lighter than a Marlin 1895 maybe 2# or so.  I have not brought both to the range at the same time. The only loads I have shot from the 1895 are Hornady's Leverevolution. Looking at Winchester's  super X, and Federal's Hammer Down, I have not noticed any "for Trapdoor Soringfield" warnings. Muzzle velocity on all of these is mid 1800fps and above, with the Hornady calling out 2000fps.

Rifles and cartridges are tools. Hog hunting in brush country with 10 rounds of .44. magnum in a light lever rifle like the Marlin 1894 is the right tool. Facing an angry moose or bear at close range, the 45-70 is the right tool for the job.

Born and raised in Alaska-35 years a bushman there. I grew up hunting moose and caribou there surrounded by grizzly bear. I also hiked, mountaineered, gold prospected and explored....surrounded by grizzly bear. The list of weapons and calibers I would ever accept for stopping a grizzly bear was very short until I heard a story. Until 2016, I only would accept 12guage slug/buck/slug/buck/slug loadouts, a .45-70 Marlin GBL, a .500 revolver or a 10mm Auto Glock. Then I heard of a man that my game warden friend helped walk out of a bear encounter from. He put down an 800lb charging sow grizzly that started at him from 40 yards, and dropped dead at his feet. His weapon of choice? An AK-74. Number of rounds necessary? 17. Never forgot that story.

I have a .457 Wild West Magnum/45-70, model 1895 Marlin.  I love the rifle.

I also have a .454 Casull lever action rifle and a Ruger Super Red Hawk with a 7.5" barrel,  .454 Casull/.45 Colt.  I love them both and always travel with them together.

I’m going to buy the Marlins 30-30, 357, 44, and 45-70 lever rifles!

Looks like I'm not the only knucklehead who has more money than brains.
I have a beautiful Henry brass 45-70 with a matching brass scope.She's a beauty.
I went on a rifle bender and bought a bunch of different guns, Bass pro had a great deal on a Rossi Stainless 44 mag carbine.I put an aftermarket ghost ring site on it.
I got a good one, smooth action some type of Brazilian hardwood for the stock.I had to buy some accessories to mounta sling ez install.Its a lightweight ez to maneuver gun that's got plenty of punch.

You left out that It’s illegal to use hand gun cartridges in many localities, and Henry’ 45-70 is 7 round.

Just get both
