There was a serious fear that she could be made as a hostage or even political pawn of the Axis powers when they occupied Greece. However they recognized that harming her could have serious backlash among the populace and thought her relatively harmless. So she was left alone.
It is said that her daughters (who were married to German princes with Nazi affiliations) tried to get her to relocate to Germany for her protection but she refused to abandon Greece. It is also said that a German General approached her and asked if there was anything that he (or the German government) could do for her, and she pointedly told him “you can leave my country”
She was a remarkable and fearless woman
