Damn. all these kids with there blast beats and super technical chops don’t realize how amazing this drumming really is . Take note this is what amazing drumming is.
It makes me so happy to see people coming back at this time to appreciate Jim’s work. As a drummer in the modern era these guys lay the foundations we all stand on
Jim. GORDONS kit drumming was genius in every way. Perfect feel, drum fills and dynamic levels. One of the greatest drummers with a legendary track record. Have mercy and understanding that serious mental illness caused his tragedy. Rest in peace Jim Gordon.
The coolest thing about this is equally legendary drummer Andy Newmark was the original drummer for the album. he plays on the rest of the album, but Richard Perry wanted JG for this song. Rather than be upset about it, Newmark asked JG if he could sit in the recording booth with him while recording this so he could learn from JG. JG said yes. Andy Newmark is actually sitting in the booth during this recording. That’s the mark of a true pro.
The momentary switch to cross stick adds something that can’t really be put into words. There’s no “reason” for it, except the feeling of the song is served by it.
Andy Newark told me he sat at the corner behind the drums while Jim was cutting the track. Richard Perry was very pernickety about every nuance. Andy said it was like watching perfection. They did about 40 takes. Jim just rolled with it.
