Crazy that a $600 M4 Mac mini now runs circles around this machine in most workloads.

I’ve got a 2013 trashcan. I put in 64gb ram last year, I still use it to run Pro Tools Studio and Logic Pro X, it runs really smoothly and also doubles up as a radiator heating up my office in the winter.

This design would be so sick with Apple Silicon chips!

At my job perhaps 10 years ago we had one of these Mac computers on a desk in the office. Two monitors were also on the table. They weren’t connected, don’t remember why. One day when I went to work the window facing towards a parking lot had been broken. The monitors were gone. But not the Mac. It was fully upgraded since it had been used for converting video files for the company’s streaming service. Back then we thought that the thief probably thought it was a trashcan so that why it wasn’t stolen. And the monitors were cheap, unlike the Mac.

In terms of design this mac pro is still my favorite pc case in existance. I wish theyd revisit it so I could get one with the same form but modern specs.

Just goes to show that 10 grand is NOT the sweet spot for price/performance..spending 2k every few years at least keeps you on a system that's not too obsolete 12 years later

It's the "take my money" fan boy purchase like no other.   I got one and I'm still shaking my head.

a $600 M4 Mac mini would be a much better option for everything you proposed, however, far more importantly the energy cost would save you around $250 per year (if used for a server), so 8-10 years you would save around $2000 !

As a home media server it's not necessarily a good idea because it's power consumption will be too high relative to a modern N305 or similar mini PC.

I ran VMware esxi on one of these at work for years as a test bed for enterprise Mac management. Was worth every penny to run 7 virtual Mac’s and be able to take/roll back snapshots of them during testing.

8:02: believe it or not, for certain export tasks, or more specifically for H.264, the Mac Pro was easily outpaced by most other Macs just because of Intel's Quick Sync which was never put in Xeon processors. So people who'd have to regularly export in H.264 (and later H.265) saw much slower exports with the 2013 Mac Pro than with their MacBook Pros. A lot of people gave up editing with the 2013 Mac Pro just because it lacked that optimisation. A bit ironic that despite having such a beefy CPU and GPU it ended up being outpaced with a well optimised MacBook Pro CPU.

In fact with that in mind it's actually probably not a great media server since Plex is better suited with Quick Sync because of how efficient it is. This thing probably uses more energy just in idle than an average Plex server does while running.

Would be cool if apple made a special edition Mac Studio in the shape of 2013 MacPro.

It runs Monterey natively. Not just to Mojave. And it is awesome for audio work. Plenty fast and it is compatible with a lot of older but good audio hardware and software

I have a mac pro 6.1 2013, I installed macos sequoia using OCLP, I do audio production on it, logic pro x, pro tools,... office, video/photo editing...it works great.

M4 + MacPro 2013 design = BANGER

I had one of these, 3 of them to be exact. plagued with problems. was constantly in warranty repair, and then got replacements, unit after 3 replacements, they gave me 5K credit towards an iMac Pro  2019 that was 10K. I'm using it still today and still running strong. I have a M2 MacBook, and yes it's faster, but the large screen is the best ever. The trash can was a problem from the get go.

It’s worth noting that for the majority of use cases, the 8 core CPUs are actually the best overall option for these trash cans.  Far more cache than the 4 and 6 cores and vastly improved boost clock tables over the 12 core.  Makes for a noticeably more responsive machine.

I still have mine - it’s a home storage server and runs like a champ.

I still love this computer. I upgraded the one we have at the studio and crafted a a wooden cradle for it to lay horizontal in a rack.  It’s sooooo cool

I'm using it now running Mac OS Sequoia, everything works GOOOD. I'm not into gaming or video editing though. For normal work and not too heavy task makes this machine usable.
