I think that the big wooden thing that they almost finished making at 1:53:01 was a powered carding drum - for processing wool or cotton. Fibers stick to the wooden belt better than they wood rubber or metal.

Tanneries are the worst places for the smell alone. These guys have my respect for doing this job because leather is a product society can’t live without.
