Description
Have you ever had a day when you simply cannot focus? You sit down to work, check your phone, open Instagram or YouTube, and suddenly hours have disappeared. A fascinating study discussed in this video suggests that at least some problems we interpret as poor attention, or even symptoms resembling ADHD, may have another contributor hiding underneath.
We explore brain-imaging research on what stimulant medications appear to do to arousal, reward, and attention networks, why sleep deprivation can produce symptoms such as distractibility, impulsivity, and emotional dysregulation, and how delayed circadian rhythms may overlap with ADHD.
We also unpack two apparent paradoxes of stimulant medications: why they can help struggling performers more than high performers, and why a “stimulant” can sometimes make a hyperactive person appear calmer.
