No, you didn't.

They Live didn't fail because the world ignored its warning. It failed because you turned the warning into a t-shirt.

In 1988, John Carpenter made a film about manufactured consent, corporate control, and the invisible architecture of consumer obedience. Roddy Piper put on a pair of sunglasses and saw the truth.

Audiences (eventually) applauded. They bought the poster, printed the slogans, and wore the OBEY hoodies.

And, guess what? Nothing changed.

Because They Live is the most successful failed warning in cinema history.

Its imagery became so culturally ubiquitous that it stopped being a warning and became part of the spectacle it was trying to expose.

This is the film that proved you can sell rebellion back to the people who think they're rebelling.

If you ever try to tell someone the truth they are denying it feels like the alley fight. The length of the fight makes sense

I love the alley fight. At first, I just enjoyed the spectacle of the fight. Then I heard someone say that the fight represents the ideological struggle between those who want others to see and those who don't want to know

You can tell it was written for Kurt Russell, but God bless Roddy, he absolutely nails it. Anyone who knows his life story will know that he literally came from the bottom. He left home at 15, spent some time homeless in hostels, boxed to earn money, then fought men twice his age in the wrestling ring. There was always a pain to Roddy’s voice when he spoke. He really had been through a lot of trauma during a time when he would have been totally alone. He openly admitted he wouldn’t reach pension age, due to the abuse his body had taken. You can see that from how big he was in this film. Rowdy Riddy Piper, what a human!

You say that the movie uses the glasses to shortcuts getting off your seat and doing something, then ignore the imagery of the fight scene. A struggle to get even those who agree with you most that there is something wrong. It's the difficulty of coalition building in the form of a fight scene. It's a metaphor for how you can finally have the proof that people have suspected all along, but they won't look because they've internalized the control even as they rage against it. Either reconsider your take on it or start eating that trash can.

The same trope of accidentally gaining true vision of who rules was also in PK Dick short story "Faith Of Our Fathers". It ends pessimistically for that insight is a curse you have to bear unable to win.
