Why do motorcycle riders crash? The answer to that question will change depending on who you ask. Ask the general public and they’ll likely say “they were definitely speeding and being reckless”. Ask a rider, though, and the answer will lean more towards “they didn’t see you, did they?”

But regardless of who’s at fault, one thing is for certain. Since the early 2000s, while passenger vehicle deaths have trended down, motorcycle deaths have only trended up. Naturally, there’s many factors behind that trend, and world authorities have been trying to understand these deaths for decades. Here's what they found.

Awareness is good, knowing what it is telling you is priceless.

In addition to driving as if you are invisible, always drive at a speed which you can stop the bike within the reach of your sight.

A-Pillars in modern cars are so huge you can easily hide an 18-wheeler behind them, never mind a motorcycle.

Putting interactive screens and infotainment in cars was a great idea^^ on 10000km on a motorcycle, ive lost count on how many times i have avoided or braked hard, because someone was looking anywhere but where they probably would have looked had there not been so many distractions in cars these days

One critique: looking to see if the other driver is looking at you or "sees you" is not helpful because often they can look at you and NOT SEE YOU. All the other stuff is great.

Don't count on eye contact. I've had mates who made full eye contact with a driver and they still pulled out. It's like the average driver's brain is scanning for 'car' or 'lorry' or something big, and anything else is something small and presumably slow like a pedestrian or cyclist, so it must be safe to pull out. Always watch the front wheels for rotation suggesting they're moving off

People on phones.
There was a spike in motorcycle fatalities that trends perfectly with the rise of text messaging in the early 2000's.
Every single riding season I have near misses with people texting.

The big flaw in that study is that single-vehicle non-fatal motorcycle crashes are going to be underrepresented. Guys that crash solo, and are capable of walking away from it, aren't going to advertise to the police that they crashed, and have that added to their driving record. That's why earlier studies focused on the split between single-vehicle and multi-vehicle fatalities.

A great video addressing our top potential danger areas. In 45 years of road riding I've had 2 accidents, both with cars pulling out. Have it covered, that's the best advice a motorcyclist can have - every junction, every car nosing out of their driveway, be aware and have it covered.....which means controlling your speed near these potential hazards, putting your bike in the best position for visibility....having your lights on, wearing bright colours helps a bit, but some drivers fail to see bikes/ cars/lorries ! I've had plenty of cars 'not see me' whilst in my car, fortunately I drive my car using my bike instincts. Biking is still brilliant despite the busier roads 👍🏻

A great deal of car drivers are looking / scrolling on their phones. They know they are not supposed to, so keep it on their lap. This means they are looking directly down whilst driving forward. Next time you are at a red light, try playing who’s looking down when the other side is on green.

When someone is turning left in front of me, I obviously get ready to brake if needed, but I also do a little sway. Not a significant swerve or anything, just a bit of a sway so that my profile stands out a bit from the background of the drivers vision.

Look up the "selective attention test" if you want to understand. An old timer said early on in my riding career "it's YOUR job to keep YOU safe. Doesn't matter who's right of way, you're gonna lose" and it's served me well. Knowing about the attention thing helps you not get worked up after dodges, which keeps you from making mistakes after.

As a postie, spending 5 hours per day judging hundreds of intersections, we have found when the bike and car meet at the intersection at similar speeds the A pillars of the car forms a blind spot which the bike sits behind. NO ONE SPEAKS ABOUT THIS. We hear all the time , " i looked but did not see you ". Also , in Australia, car drivers are supposed to look right, left , right before crossing at intersection. Instead they look left, glance right then left again therefore not allowing the eyes and brain to process the bike which is hidden behind the A pillar. We have hundreds of videos proving this. As a rider if you meet a car at an intersection at similar times you must remove yourself from the A Pliiar BLIND SPOT on both sides of the car by slowing down or in some cases speeding up.
