Its refreshing that someone finally is talking about the dark sides along with the light. I met some pretty vile people (and had some good friends turn pretty vile too) back as part of all this, I also met a lot of lovely people too. It was a complex time and a complex scene, like all times and scenes are. The 'vibe' was almost a religion, often used as an excuse for simply bad behaviour, and hugely divisive and exclusive as much as it was loving and inclusive. When people get shitfaced day after day at 18-22 years old, things will be messy and complicated. It attracted bad people and good people. Its nothing like as romantic as its been made out to be. It was human. Real, wonderful, messy and human.

I am 60 years young this has made my day thanks for those mad nights ❤

I was at a freeparty once. my car got stuck in the mud. I got a guy with a 4x4 to tow it out. I tried repeatedly to give him £20 in return. He would not take any money from me! that taught me everything about the freeparty scene. Also, I decided I would help others get their vehicles out of the mud too. this is what it's all about. sharing. f*** money!

Spiral Tribe was one of my earliest influences, and being from America, it amazes me that I was introduced to their sound and their ideas in 1993.

A friend from that time (1993} shared their music with me, and then Read Truth (Sonic Groove Records in NYC) used both Coyote and Drivin on a 1994 mix tape he did that I was given a copy of. These early exposers to their music shaped my taste and love for boundary pushing Techno build on artistic values & merit.  Those ideals in Techno production is how I define Underground.  For the music & the the experience first.

I owe a huge, unplayable debit to the early influences that shaped me to thfs day. Spiral Tribe, Sonic Groove, my local scene artists who opened the initial door, like Joelectronik, Dave McMahon, Sonic Groove curators Reade Truth, store owner Adam X, and the early experiences I shared with all of them that has kept me involved in the music & my local scene to this day.

I was fortunate enough to attend a Spiral Tribe gathering when they came to the US to tour in 1995 & they stopped in Manchester, NH, between their Detroit & NYC dates.  An experience I will hold for eternity in appreciation.  I purchased 20 (now super rare) original NTW23 releases (1992-1995) they were selling out of their tour van. Some of the rarest vinyl in Techno at this point.  Crystal Distortion 1/3, Crystal Acid, Untitled R-Zac, CatSpit II, and many others. Records that I will forever cherish for what they represent & the last recordings pressed on . prior to to,  their irreplaceable synths, stuuhaving

I have so much respect for Spiral tribrr, and an appreciation for RZack, Crystal Distortion, Unit Mobius, and so mant manes more.

Nuff Respect to Seb , SP23 & All the Free Party Massive. ❤️

We used to cook proper dahl and rice and donate some to the sounds. Because people needed to eat well after driving hours to find the party. I guess drugs are different these days and people are either not hungry as a result of just go to the Motorway Maccys but that was one little way we tried to make a difference.. Thanks for the flashbacks.I remember Lewisham library with Back to the Planet but thout it was the 30th October 1991.because the clocks changed..❤

Followed Spiral Tribe back in early 90s from Amsterdam to Germany to random parties and back again waking up in Leiden with the realisation that freedom of expression is  a threat to the manufactured control based status quo expected of society, awesome stuff.

Let’s become spirals again!! 23!!! The Spiral Tribe helped me waking up when I was 14 in 1993. Since then I got the Virus of 23. Big Up. Stand tall. Seb. 69db, you are one of my heroes. You bring so much Light always. Love. LSD!!! FREE PARTY YOUR MIND!!! FPYM. JUST BE YOURSELF. SP23 for ever !! ALL IS ONE. ONE IS ALL. Love Supreme with Music. Music and Dance is a Practice. So agree with you. Act and Think with Responsability. Higher. Elevate ourselves.  You make me so happy. You haven’t changed a bit. We have to resist with Music and Dance Against the Psychopaths. We are Free. I ADORE YOU!!! You just made me once again stronger. Sharper. Let’s Elevate!! Still standing tall!! My faith is unreligious.

Together is more of us the spiral is coming b4ck

What he’s talking about at 8:00 in, reminds me about a channelling message I once read which explained that star seed and light workers were using dance to anchor their spirit on Earth so they could begin their life‘s purpose of helping the planet awaken… Millions of us danced our souls into our cells…

The adventure continues, that was just the opening for many of us

Spent my 18th Birthday at a Spiral Tribe event. I'm 41 now. Mad 😅

I loved the sprial tribe parties in the 90's. Still got my old flyer . Great times ❤️

Speaking your truth. Fair play. Lots to think about there.  Like what you are saying about money, generosity, supporting each other properly, ravers unions. Lots I can relate to going back to when I was an innocent, alienated young crusty looking for free festivals and encountering free parties. Inspired by them. So glad I experienced that but also saw so much darkness in there that made me feel unsafe. Lots a lot of friends to smack...Lot of water under the bridge since then. left the country, left the scene, kept searching for something, found bits of what I was looking for all over. .

Some quick thoughts: Going beyond parties into how we meet our basic needs outside capitalism; food, housing, water, services. Integrate the party scene into a broader movement to create a better system....
A lot of the raw material for this exists already; for instance talking about creating talking spaces in the rave scene. The ecological, social direct action movement is pretty good at this and there’s prob a good bit of cross over and a lot of the same convos are happening around how a movement can look after it’s members properly and how to become economically viable without getting into private profit...

i totally got goosebumps the whole interview..... I have a soundsystem in Austria for now 14 years, and nobody is getting rich with that, we just want to pay ouor rent and the repairs of the soundsystem. and we do it because we love to making party and giving the people a good time. but i have to say the austrian tekno culture is pretty generous. there are always some idiots but most of them are nice people.

to the kid who joined our fire one night at a spiral tribe party in the south of France in 94... and who fell asleep after selling brown sugar to my friend who covered him with his jacket... he might have been 12, completely alone, a few clothes on... his parents were in another party somewhere else (he didn't even know where)... I feel completely hopeless thinking about you, we wanted to take you away (hope you survived selling evil)... and then mothers who came with new borns on their backs and dropped them by a tree to go dancing by blasting hard core rhythms... no care for their ears & soft heads... bless the TAZ, the spirit of dancing in the wild, the spiral crew... but I was done after that kid... freedom isn't about drugs and apathy...

sempre grande, in tutte le direzioni. Idee, musica, tutto. love the man ❤

I've participated in a couple of free party's that started & finshed in a ceremony before & after the dance in a maloca, no alcohol only cups of catus tea served thru out the night. It was truly amazing both times I went & danced for 10 hours stright (so did every one) & then we all hang out & closed the ceremony like dance together the next day. At the end it felt like family, there was a donation tin to go towards every thing. Drove home feeling great. As a 90's rave & club go'er & DJ for 20 years I felt this coming together was so much deeper then the standard party & I know the DJ's on the night loved the energy from the crowd which they felt deeply & hance played great sets.

Absolutely  loved 😍  watching  this , MASSIVELY  RESPECT  🙏🏻  The Spiral Tribe  and all free party crews ❤

Finally, an open talk about this. I hope to see more in the future. Education has always been part of these scenes, we just need to think more about ourselves as a community rather than a bunch of party-goers.
One thing I felt was missing from the interview is a discussion about BIA (Basic Income for Artists). Ireland has created a social safety net for artists, and I truly hope more countries in Europe will follow.

Interestingly, most of the problems mentioned in the interview apply to almost any artistic field. Artists (not the pop stars) are struggling worldwide, especially with AI emerging and the witch hunts that happen when you create something more experimental or less traditional. We really need to wake up, or we’ll end up with a very gray and violent future for humanity.
