The Caribbean is not a beach. It is an ocean basin two point seven million square kilometres wide, sitting on a crust that is twice as thick as it should be, and almost everything you have been told about it is either wrong or a postcard.

There is a volcano eight kilometres north of Grenada that ships are forbidden by law to sail over. There is a hole in the floor of a bay in Mexico that a research team measured in 2024 — they ran out of instrument at 420 metres and never reached the bottom. There is a rock four metres high off the Venezuelan coast carrying a 200-nautical-mile economic claim on its back. There is an island a novelist crowned himself king of, and the kingdom still has claimants.

This is 50 facts about Caribbean geography, and not one of them is about a beach.

Every fact in this video was checked against a primary source — survey data, published papers, court records and government documents. Several claims that circulate widely in other Caribbean "facts" videos were cut during research because they do not survive contact with the record. Where scientists genuinely disagree, the video says so on air instead of picking the more dramatic version.

WHAT YOU WILL SEE

— The deepest water in the Atlantic Ocean, and the naming dispute the surveyors have never resolved
— The only national capital on Earth that is a buried ghost town and still the legal capital
— A commercial runway 400 metres long, and the pilot who proved in 1959 that it could be landed on
— The 1856 law that let any American citizen claim an unoccupied island for the United States, and the Supreme Court case that made it stick
— A cave system 386 kilometres long with a 13,000-year-old skeleton at the bottom of one shaft
— Why the Caribbean Sea makes a sound, measured and published in 2016
— The lake in the Dominican Republic that has been doing something it should not

Which one did you not believe? Put the number in the comments — one of these facts is disputed by scientists right now and I want to see who spots it.
