Netflix’s East of Eden review: this seven-episode limited series absolutely raised the bar. Florence Pugh, Christopher Abbott, Mike Faist, Hoon Lee and this entire cast delivered one of my favorite series of the year.
Hey there, Sweet P’s! We’re talking Netflix’s East of Eden, adapted from John Steinbeck’s classic novel by showrunner Zoe Kazan — and y’all, this was exceptional.
⭐ SWEET P RATING: 4.8/5
What impressed me most was how much room this series gave every single character to simply breathe and exist. Nobody felt rushed. Nobody felt like a plot device. From Cathy/Kate and Adam to Charles, Lee, Cal and Aron, every character had enough space for us to understand what made them who they were.
And underneath all of it is one of the story’s most important ideas:
TIMSHEL — “Thou mayest.”
Are we doomed to repeat the mistakes of the people who came before us, or do we still get to choose who we become?
In this review, I’m getting into Cathy/Kate’s complexity, Adam repeating the very generational patterns he hated, Charles and Cal’s desperate need to be chosen, Lee becoming the emotional center of the family, the Cain and Abel parallels, inherited trauma, morality, choice and why this adaptation worked so beautifully for me.
We also have to give Zoe Kazan her flowers because THIS is how you adapt a massive literary story into seven episodes without making the audience feel like half the character development happened offscreen.
💬 QUESTION OF THE DAY:
Who do you think understood timshel the best — Cathy, Adam, Cal, Lee, or someone else entirely?
