What Is Standby Generator?
A standby generator is a back-up electrical system that operates automatically.[1] Within seconds of a utility outage, an automatic transfer switch senses the power loss, commands the generator to start, and then transfers the electrical load to the generator. The standby generator begins supplying power to the circuits.

THERE ARE TWO KINDS OF GENERATOR OWNERS: THOSE THAT OWN A KOHLER, AND THOSE THAT WISH THEY DID..................

Remember people Kohler has a 5 year Warranty. My 20 KW Kohler now has 2.7 exercise hours at 9 months. Kohler refused to stand behind the Warranty. It’s now junk because the Repair cost of replacing the Rotor & Brushes is $5000.00. Good thing Costco will accept the Generator back.

I'm about to buy the Champion Model 100136 12.5kw standby generator and set it up as a "manual standby" as I don't want all the ATS stuff. I already use a large inverter generator I tie into a 50 amp power inlet and runs the house decent but want something that doesn't have to be wheeled outside in crappy weather, hook up gas hoses, and string a huge cable to the inlet. Since mine is already set up properly with an interlock kit, I can just feed the Champion output straight into the 50 amp breaker which is always off UNTIL the 200 amp main is turned off, interlock slid up, and 50 amp breaker powered on. We also have a 250 gallon propane tank outside. I don't need to power everything in our house but I do have important things that need to be powered like septic pump. After that, it's everything else in the house besides the 5 or 2 ton 2 stage heat pump units (although might work with soft start), network rack, all lights and switches, TV's, 2 fridges, gas oven (takes nothing), microwave if needed, washer & dryer if needed, water heater if needed, etc. Champion sells these units without the ATS which is perfect and the 12.5kw version is $3400 + tax shipped to your door and the 8.5kw is $2600 + tax shipped to your door. Pretty reasonable , to me, considering how expensive LARGE inverter generators cost that weigh 350lbs or more.

Briggs has the best customer service and they always back their product, minimum 6-year parts labor and travel warranty.. The 12kW set will start up to a 5-ton Air Conditioner, and run most homes flawlessly. Forget the sub-panel style transfer switch, do the whole home with the service entrance disconnect, it would cost the same to install. They also have a smaller footprint allowing you to stuff it in between the home or in a garden.

Who paid you off?? Generac is the most popular, then Kohler and Cummins, then Briggs & Stratton. Champion is absolute crap. A 12kW won't run the avereage household with anything bigger than a 3 ton HVAC system. And an 8.5kW won't run hardly ANYTHING, forget about anything more than wondow A/C's, you'd be better off with a large portable with an electric start. Do yourself a favor and get a 20kW and above, have it professionally sized and installed, and if you really want to run your power grid, consider liquid-cooled. And quit it with the load centers, ATS only, manually amnage loads during an outage. Oh, and for the guy that was worried about gas upgardes to supply, these are 100K BTU consumption appliances and up, somne encroaching on 400K BTU's and operatre best with a second stage regulator within 5 feet of the appliance, same with pool heaters and on-demand water heaters. You're just gonna burn up the engine without the upgrade to 2#'s or more. Rubes...

how is cummins not on the list? i hear nothing but good on them, i just ordered a 20kw cummins

@jochimbenschneider1915 3 years ago (edited)

Kohler is best. 20,000 standby is most popular. And yes you need a concrete pad which I got and below the pad we put packed gravel rock 5” thick so no mice will not burrow and make the generator y level as they notoriously do in country areas and on heat pumps. and the generator will sit very level. It’s bolted down and we live in the country. The cost was not cheap but not as expensive as some quotes from Generac. I believe Kohler is a little bit better.

Just bought a Champion 12.5 KW with 100A ATS. I would have had to upgrade my gas supply at great expense to use the 14KW

Wish Honda made a standby generator.

Where is the cummins generator. I think that cummins is the best generator

@antiquarian3942 3 years ago

Sounds to me like this ad was put together by Champion. 😂 Come on, at least compare apples to apples when you're talking about generators. Which generator manufacturer holds 82% market share in North America and which brand is the easiest to install. Most importantly, which name comes to mind first when you think about backup generators for home standby power... GENERAC!! 👍
