The Allegheny locomotive was one of the most powerful steam locomotives ever built — and in some measures, it surpassed the legendary Union Pacific Big Boy.

Built by Lima Locomotive Works for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway, the C&O H-8 Allegheny was an enormous 2-6-6-6 steam locomotive designed to move heavy freight through demanding mountain territory.

But how powerful was the Allegheny? And was it really more powerful than Big Boy?

In this video, we explore the history, engineering, horsepower, tractive effort, and massive proportions of the Allegheny steam locomotive. We’ll also compare the Allegheny vs Big Boy to understand why these two American steam giants were built for different jobs — and why the H-8 Allegheny deserves a place among the greatest steam locomotives ever constructed.
