Welcome to our Srimad Bhagavatam Study! Tonight we are reading chapters 16 and 17 of the 6th Canto of the Srimad Bhagavatam.
In these two chapters of the Sixth Canto of the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam, we follow the extraordinary spiritual journey of King Citraketu. After being instructed by Aṅgirā and Nārada Muni, Citraketu performs intense devotion and finally receives the rare blessing of a direct audience with Lord Saṅkarṣaṇa. Overwhelmed with spiritual realization, he offers heartfelt prayers recognizing the Lord as the supreme controller beyond material nature. Pleased with his humility, the Lord grants him deep spiritual knowledge and the ability to travel the universe as a liberated Vidādharā king. While journeying through the cosmos, Citraketu beholds Lord Śiva seated with Pārvatī on his lap before an assembly of sages. Speaking in a light-hearted and affectionate tone, Citraketu comments on this unusual scene, recognizing Lord Śiva’s transcendence. Although Śiva is amused and takes no offense, Pārvatī misunderstands the remark as disrespect. In anger, she curses Citraketu to take birth as a demon. Demonstrating profound spiritual maturity, Citraketu accepts the curse without complaint and departs peacefully. Afterward, Lord Śiva explains to the gathered sages that Citraketu’s humility and steadiness in honor and dishonor reveal the qualities of a true devotee. This moment sets the stage for Citraketu’s next life as Vṛtrāsura, a seemingly demonic figure who will later exhibit one of the most exalted examples of pure devotion in the entire Bhāgavatam.
