Captain Eric "Winkle" Brown holds records that will never be broken: 487 aircraft types flown and 2,407 carrier deck landings. This comprehensive documentary presents the definitive historical account of his extraordinary life across the most perilous transitions in military aviation.

Raised in Scotland, Brown’s early career intersected with history when Ernst Udet flew him inverted over Halle in 1936. After observing the pre-war Luftwaffe and surviving arrest by the SS in Munich in September 1939, Brown joined the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm. Operating Grumman Wildcats from Britain’s first escort carrier, HMS Audacity, he devised flat head-on attacks against four-engine Focke-Wulf Fw 200 Condors and stalked U-boat wolf packs. Sunk in the freezing Atlantic in December 1941, he survived four hours in the sea, cementing a clinical devotion to cockpit preparation that saved his life through eleven major crashes.

Posted to RAE Farnborough, Brown tackled aviation's most hazardous frontiers. He proved multi-engine deck landings by bringing the de Havilland Mosquito aboard an escort carrier below stall speed for Operation Highball. When Eighth Air Force bombers suffered crippling losses, Brown investigated high-altitude compressibility for General Jimmy Doolittle, identifying dive recovery trim issues in P-38s and P-47s while validating the Merlin Mustang. He was assigned to pilot Britain’s supersonic Miles M.52, an advanced design with a biconvex Gillette wing and all-moving flying tail, before its sudden, controversial cancellation.

In 1945, after witnessing the liberation of Bergen-Belsen and interrogating Josef Kramer and Irma Grese, Brown led technical exploitation missions across Germany. He evaluated Mach 4.4 wind tunnels and test-flew advanced Axis machines, including the Messerschmitt Me 262, Arado Ar 234, and volatile rocket-powered Me 163 Komet, before interrogating Hermann Göring. Brown went on to revolutionize carrier aviation with the angled deck, steam catapult, and world-first jet carrier landing in a Vampire, later taking the F-86 Sabre supersonic and championing the F-4 Phantom.
