Never understand why they get so confused about the two taps. Just put the bloody plug in!! Fill the bowl with water to the temperature you want and wash your hands. It's not rocket science.
Maybe I'm over-romanticising, but my impression is that if a Brit saw a female being harrassed in public, they would most likely intervene to protect the victim.
Re. the NHS. One thing often overlooked is that it has massive, well organised vaccination schemes and given that it is all "free" the uptake is a large percentage of the population. This gives a "herd" immunity making everyone, even the few unvaccinated, safer.
Plus, knife crime in the United States is also higher than knife crime in the UK - by about 50% to 70% higher, depending on the precise comparison, whether local or national.
A woman was on the design team of the British G type, Caroline Haslett, who insisted on many of its human-centric ergonomic design features, emphasising safety for children and ease of use for a housewife. She insisted on:
a. Shuttered Sockets Type G sockets have internal shutters that cover live and neutral terminals. They only open when the longer earth pin is inserted, preventing accidental contact. This makes it safer for children. b. Sturdy and Secure Connection The plug fits firmly into the socket with strong friction grip. Large pins and robust construction reduce the chance of partial insertion or arcing. c. Correct ergonomic size The size of the plug is for a human hand to hold securely and safely. Intentionally designed to be large enough to be grasped safely, reducing the risk of finger contact with live pins. d. Flex safety The flex hangs downwards not outwards, to avoid pulling the plug out from the socket. It avoids tripping on the flex. Also reduces strain on the flex. It keeps the flex neat and safe in domestic settings allowing furniture to be closer to the socket e. Unobtrusive The sockets were to be flush with the wall preventing damage from impact or snagging. f. Switched The plug has an integral switch so as to keep the plug in the socket and control an appliance. g. Fused Has an integral fuse from 1A to 13A. This protects the flex and appliance. The fuse also enables final ring circuits which may eliminate a number of radial circuits. h. Insulated prongs Fingers cannot touch energised L and N prongs.
The British G type plug and socket is a design classic.
Thank you for your brutal honesty. As a local, I have never really appreciated our freedom and constantly hear the noise from across the pond about how we are not free. Whilst I know about all the things you have said, having grown up here, your deeply insightful perspective makes the difference in our evolution all the more special.
I grew up in the UK and lived abroad in Spain for 6 months, it really made me appreciate and also question alot of the things I've grown up with. I subsequently lived in Kenya too with similar things, it's really interesting what you get out of living in another country and culture, you rarely get out of it what you expect but you always get something out of it.
The glorious 3 pin plug. With the marking BS 1363/A on it is designed to be knocked about. throw it on a floor and it holds together. Its biggest danger is standing on it in the night when its upside down.
