Thank you for your advice. After trying other recommendations I was about to take the carburetor off and learn how to clean it, something I wanted to avoid - the carburetor cleaner fix worked.

This totally worked on my 217 today.  Would only run for 5 seconds on choke then die.  Removed bolt, sprayed with CRC and she all good.

Thank you for sharing, it cured my problem, brilliant. I did infact change the spark plug first that can cause this issue I read but that didn't sort it, your solution has. Now back to mowing, what is now, quite long grass!

Thanks, even though I had run the gas dry before storing it, I still had to do this to get it running. Guess I’ll have to open up carb bottom to get every drop of gas out before storage

I love these Honda mowers have a gas cap has four little holes. If you take a paper clip and clean those out, the gas can vent properly and then it will start.
