Come in out of the snow, and settle in. Tonight the up train from Perth sticks in the drifts a mile below an old coaching inn at the head of a Highland pass, on a still December night in 1881, and the guard walks his passengers up the road toward the one lit lamp in the whole glen.

Mr. Duncan Gow has kept that inn for twenty-nine years, since the railway took the coaches off the road and left him four travellers a week. He has trimmed and lit the brass lamp over the door every evening of those years, for a road that mostly stopped coming. Tonight eleven strangers walk up out of the snow toward it. There is a long room opened and its fire lit, broth and ham and oat bread for everyone, a woman from Dundee who rolls her sleeves up in the kitchen without being asked, the passage clock telling the hours, the stable at three in the morning with the lantern and the horses, and at first light the plough engine's whistle coming up the pass. Nothing bad happens to anyone, anywhere, all night long.

This story is made for sleep: a low, unhurried voice, no music, no sudden sounds, and nowhere you need to be. Made for drifting off, for quiet company while you read or work, or for the nights when sleep is slow to come.

🌙 Perfect for:
• Falling asleep without racing thoughts
• Long nights, insomnia, or jet lag
• Calm background company — no music, no interruptions
• Anyone who loves snow on the hills, a lamp over a door, and the gentler past

If the snow helped you rest, a gentle subscribe keeps the lamp lit over the door — and tell me in the comments where in the world you're listening from.

Sleep well. The lamp will be lit, and the road will keep till morning.
