THE NETHERLANDS BUILT A 32 KM WALL ACROSS THE SEA — AND IT'S ALREADY BEING REINFORCED

The Netherlands built something that sounds impossible: a 32-kilometer barrier across a former arm of the North Sea.

Completed in 1932, the Afsluitdijk transformed the Zuiderzee into the freshwater IJsselmeer, reshaping the Dutch coastline and becoming one of the most important pieces of water-management infrastructure in Europe.

But the Afsluitdijk was never just a wall.

It became a highway, shipping corridor, flood-defense system, freshwater reservoir, and the foundation for one of the largest land-reclamation projects in modern history.

This documentary follows how Dutch engineers built the barrier, why the 1916 Zuiderzee flood helped trigger the project, how thousands of workers constructed the dike across open water, and how the system continues to evolve nearly a century later.

The modern challenge is even more complicated.

Rising sea levels, stronger wave loading, difficult drainage conditions, navigation requirements, freshwater management, and fish migration are forcing engineers to upgrade a structure that has already been operating for generations.

At Den Oever, new pumping capacity allows water to move from the IJsselmeer toward the Wadden Sea when gravity alone is no longer enough.

The result is a remarkable example of infrastructure that has become part of the geography itself.

The Dutch did not simply stop the sea.

They built a system that decides where the water is allowed to go.

In this documentary:
• How the Afsluitdijk was constructed across the Zuiderzee
• The 1916 flood that changed Dutch water policy
• Why the Zuiderzee became the IJsselmeer
• How sluices and pumps control the water system
• How the dike enabled Dutch land reclamation
• Why the structure is being reinforced today
• How engineers are balancing flood protection with fish migration
• Why the Afsluitdijk still matters nearly 100 years later
