A hidden shrine in Kamakura.
1,000 foxes watching in silence.
And a legend that leads back to the first shogun of Japan.

This is Sasuke Inari Shrine, a quiet, mysterious Inari shrine hidden in the forest of Kamakura.

It is not as famous as Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto, but the atmosphere here is completely different. Small fox figures fill the shrine grounds, old paths lead deeper into the forest, and the legend of Minamoto no Yoritomo still remains in this place.

In this video, I explore Sasuke Inari Shrine and the strange world of Inari worship, fox messengers, Shinto belief, and Kamakura history.

Why are there so many foxes at Inari shrines in Japan?
And why does this place feel so mysterious?
