Curry was punch perfect here. Standing in front of Jones, eye's fixated on him waiting to strike. Never wasted a shot or a single movement. The cobra indeed.
Two real good fighters. Curry was a natural, this was before he changed his style and started holding his head up and getting knocked out. Jones had started to slow down by the time he fought Curry. Guys who fight like Jones don't have long careers. Jones was smart and got out at the right time.
Remember our whole extended family watching this. (Before boxing went on pay tv and became more niche). Talk about screaming and shouting. Stirring stuff indeed. Gutted for Colin but readily acknowledging Curry’s skills.
This shows just how good Curry was. To move Jones backwards and around like that. And to instil a look of apprehension into Colin`s eyes. THAT took some doing. No other fighter could have done this to Colin Jones. With the possible exception of Sugar Ray Leonard.
Curry at that time was amazing a real sharpshooter, gunslinger. He was on top but Jones was firing back it was really shaping up to be a great fight. It’s a pity about the cut because Jones was the type who always got stronger as the fight went on. Curry would have probably prevailed though he was a borderline great at that time.
Curry at the time was considered to be one of the pound for pound best fighters in the world. I remember Ring magazine talking about him fighting Hagler.
