The "double deckers" you saw are called C3s! They're based off the C1s. The C3s were built by Kawasaki, however the C1s were designed by Comeng, one of the last projects that the firm undertook before closing in 1990 but were built by the Tokyu Car Corporation. Basically, as we know, LIRR service into Manhattan is electric-only, and the LIRR wanted to both replace their aging diesel rolling stock and try to offer a one-seat ride for those on the non-electrified portions of the network to Penn Station, specifically testing it on the busy but partially electrified Port Jefferson Branch (not electrified between Huntington and Port Jefferson) due to political interest. The LIRR relied on Budd for its electric M1s and M3s, but by the 1980s, they were part of Thyssen and leaving the rail business, so LIRR looked for alternatives. Three groups approached them, Comeng/Mitsui, Alsthom, and Sumitomo/Nippon Sharyo. The LIRR favored Comeng's design. Originally, the LIRR wanted single-levels due to the troubled experience they had with the "double-decker" EMUs called the PRR MP70s that entered service in 1932 and featured a single-level with two levels of seats with a prototype seating 120 passengers in one car while the rest could sit 132 (which there's only one left that's preserved; the prototype at the Railroad Museum of LI in Riverhead), but Comeng convinced them to do bi-levels. Comeng's ability to fulfill the contract was of course jeopardized by the instability of Australian National Industries. In the end, Comeng sold the design of the C1 to Mitsui, who then engaged Tokyu Car Corporation to build the cars. They entered service in 1991 and after it was a success, based on feedback from passengers, the LIRR created an updated design called the C3 thanks to help from former Comeng engineers, with these built by Kawasaki. The C3s entered service in 1999 and when they did, the C1s retired as they were mechanically incompatible with the C3s. Ever since, the Cape Cod Central Railroad got their hands on C1s for their heritage railroad!

When the bi-levels were introduced, as they were built for high-level platforms, this led to the diesel stations to be turned into high-level platforms, finally catching up to the electric stations that already got high-level platforms thanks to the Budd M1s and M3s. The C3s were the first trains on the LIRR to feature automated announcements with LED destination sign displays, announcing the current station, the following station, and destinations along the routes. Yup, the C3s got them before the M7s! The locomotive in front of the C3s is a EMD DE30AC and DM30AC class, built exclusively for the LIRR. The difference between DE30ACs and DM30ACs is that the DM30ACs are dual-mode and can use the third-rail while the diesel engine is off. In January 2025, the MTA officially announced they opted to replace this class with a complete dual-mode fleet of 44 Siemens Chargers. In December 2020, the MTA board approved a Federal Transit Administration-funded $335 million contract for 27 dual-mode Siemens Charger-based design locomotives for Metro-North. This included additional options for up to 144 more locomotives, of which 66 could go to the LIRR. As a part of the LIRR's Capital Program, they chose to exercise Option 3 of the previously awarded contract to order up to 44 of them.

19:29 The automated announcements kicked in here because the train was using the destination program for the Hoboken-WTC line, hence why the destination signs were green on the front and back. PATH is pretty weird in the fact that it doesn’t really have extra destination programs for services outside of regular operations.

This was actually a great route!  I would not have thought to take PATH from 33rd st down to WTC.  That's a brilliant idea actually!!

Thanks for doing this kind of convoluted route from JFK Airport to the World Trade Center.  Interesting to see the PATH train go from NYC to NYC one way.  It seems like it would be kind of a money waster but at least it’s a journey to take.

Hope you get to ride the Metro North Railroad in the future.  It’s been years since you did and you have not ridden the Harlem or New Haven routes yet so that could make for some interesting video content.
