The Saikyo High School Water Polo Team became the first team from Yamaguchi Prefecture to win the 10th All-Japan Junior (U17) Water Polo Championship in March 2024. To discover the secret to their strength, we delve into their daily training, team tactics, and interview players.

Saikyo High School is unique among public schools in that it has an indoor pool, allowing the Water Polo Team to train in a privileged environment. They won the All-Japan Junior Water Polo Championship in March of this year, becoming the national champion for the first time in 17 years since the team was founded in 2007.

Captain Yuya Muraoka said, "The secret to our strength is a team that makes the most of each player's individuality," emphasizing the importance of teamwork on both defense and offense. The team's tactics are solid defense and fast attacks, and they utilize their overwhelming swimming ability to score goals.

The team's ace, Seiki Wakatsuki, is determined to "be the ace who leads the team to victory," while Hiroto Matsuda, who was selected for the Japanese national team, also stated, "I want to become a player who can compete as a member of the Japanese national team."

Many of the players have been members of the Yamaguchi Water Polo Club since childhood and currently train daily under the guidance of coach Shinya Kimura. Coach Kimura emphasizes to his players that "shots are something you have to score," and he urges them to pass the ball quickly and shoot with confidence.

Another tactic of the team is "smile when you're in a pinch." It's important to keep smiling and enjoy playing, no matter what the situation. Even in the final game of the national tournament in March, when the team was coming back from a tight spot in the final minutes, the entire team encouraged each other and made an effort to smile and enjoy playing.

Energy is also essential during practice, and the manager prepares hot meals. On this day, the players were served ketchup rice.

With this team's speed, power, cheerfulness, and smiles, they will aim to win the Inter-High School Championships. Let's support the Saikyo High School Water Polo Team as they take on the challenge!

They are also scheduled to compete in the Chugoku Qualifying Tournament for the Inter-High School Championships, which begins in Shimane Prefecture on July 12th. Everyone, please look forward to it!
