(1) Introduction

Developmental disorders are often associated with frequent mistakes and strong fixations. However, in reality, there are many other symptoms, many of which are difficult for those around the individual to notice. These easily overlooked symptoms are often accompanied by easily overlooked difficulties. This time, we will cover three representative examples.

(2) Commonly Known Symptoms of Developmental Disorders

Developmental disorders are believed to be caused by innate imbalances in brain function. When specific symptoms such as the fixations of ASD or the inattention of ADHD persist for a long time and reach the level of a disorder, they significantly impact various aspects of life. The most common are ADHD, characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, and ASD, characterized by fixations and difficulties in interpersonal relationships. ADHD is known for its inattentive mistakes, and in recent years, awareness has increased, leading to more adults and women being diagnosed. ASD is also gradually becoming more widely known, but it is still often misunderstood or subjected to prejudice due to difficulties in interpersonal relationships.

As awareness increases, so do the specific symptoms. In ADHD, careless mistakes and frequent forgetfulness are typical. Difficulty with tidying up is also well-known, stemming from inattention and spatial awareness. Impulsivity can also lead to acting on impulse.

In ASD, common characteristics include saying things that are inappropriate for the situation, having strong fixations on one thing, and difficulty with change. Unnatural facial expressions and tone of voice may also be noted.

(3) Three easily overlooked symptoms of developmental disorders

① Sensory hypersensitivity

The first is sensory hypersensitivity. Sensitivity to sounds and other stimuli is a symptom that is very noticeable to the individual but often misunderstood by others.

Examples include auditory hypersensitivity (excessive sensitivity to sound), photosensitivity (exhaustion from bright light), and tactile hypersensitivity (excessive sensitivity to skin, making it difficult to wear clothes). While the underlying causes are still largely unknown, it is believed that a tendency to be easily distracted by stimuli, particularly in individuals with ASD, is related to difficulty in selecting necessary stimuli from a large number of options.

Because they perceive stimuli more intensely in the same situation, they tire easily, become irritable, and have difficulty concentrating. If they are sensitive to sound, they may avoid situations where there are likely to be sounds, narrowing their range of activities.

Sensory hypersensitivity is still not widely recognized, and a strong aversion to normal sounds can be misunderstood as "exaggeration." The difficulty of the hypersensitivity itself is compounded by the difficulty of not being understood.

② Easy Fatigue

The second symptom is easy fatigue. This manifests as easily becoming tired and being unable to complete tasks, persistent fatigue even after rest, and a long-lasting feeling of lethargy and poor health.

There are three underlying reasons. First, the influence of characteristics. Due to sensory hypersensitivity, the same stimuli can have a strong impact, and prolonged exposure to these stimuli leads to accumulated fatigue.

Second, the influence of mimicry. Because they often find it difficult to adapt to their surroundings, they unconsciously try to force themselves to conform. As a result, problems decrease, and they appear to be adapting superficially, but the continued strain leads to exhaustion.

Third, difficulty in recovery. Many people with developmental disorders have sleep problems, and because they ten...
