Before BET. Before MTV. There was a hand-painted cardboard train and a promise: "love, peace, and soul." This documentary counts down ten specific performances by ten legendary R&B, soul, and funk artists — one song each — that didn't just entertain. They changed what was possible for Black music on American television.
From a Motown session guitarist's overnight transformation into a solo star, to Teena Marie's stunned-audience reveal, to the twist ending at number one — the artist who had the very first hit version of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," only to watch a bigger name become the one history remembers — this is the real history behind ten defining Soul Train moments.
Countdown: 10. Dennis Coffey — "Scorpio" (1972) 9. Chaka Khan & Rufus — "Tell Me Something Good" (1974) 8. The O'Jays — "Back Stabbers" (1972) 7. Curtis Mayfield — "We Got to Have Peace" / "Get Down" (Early 1970s) 6. Rick James — "Give It to Me Baby" (1981) 5. The Jackson 5 — "I Want You Back" (October 7, 1972) 4. Teena Marie — "I'm a Sucker for Your Love" (1979) 3. James Brown — "Papa Don't Take No Mess" (1974) 2. Aretha Franklin — "Rock Steady" (April 14, 1973)
Gladys Knight & the Pips — "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" (1967 / Soul Train, 1972)
