We are so lucky to be exposed to so many different stitching techniques. Kantha stitching and cloth is a Bengali technique rooted in sustainability, storytelling and mindfulness. Ekta Kaul is the author of Kantha: Sustainable Textiles and Mindful Making. We recently sat down and talked about this traditional embroidery and how it continues to inspire artists today.

"I got to know my maternal grandmother through her embroidery" ... I love that ❤

Women have so much in common worldwide. Crafting for centuries, often for the same reasons. And recognizing how we treasure the work done by those who came before us and influenced our art. Thank you.

I love that Ekta's son loves embroidery. When my Dad was a young boy, he sat with his Mom, aunts and great aunt while they quilted. He wasn't that interested in quilting but he was interested in the family history and gossip.

‘The Passing on of the Needle” what a wonderful title for a new book. Full of history, stories, and pictures. A shared love of textiles brings many of us together in such a wonderful way that otherwise wouldn’t happen. This was a wonderful interview.

I was privileged to see Ekta’s display at the Birmingham Festival of Quilts in 2023. It was in all honestly my favorite display at the event, I went back to it three times and was able to briefly meet Ekta to tell her I really loved her work. It’s so exciting to see her interview and learn more about the backstory of her beautiful work!

From Oklahoma USA. I bought Ekta Kaul’s book! It is wonderful! The book is thrilling to read as well as thrilling to look at! I had to start stitching even before I’d finished reading the book! It’s a large, hardcover book, a real treasure!

Ektas joy spreads to us through her sharing of stories, and restores mindfulness and slow craft back into our lives. Thank you!

Great interview! I bought a Kantha quilt at my first QuiltCon (when I actually met you too, Karen Brown!) and I love it. Now after learning more from this episode I have a greater appreciation. Thanks Karen!

Such a delightful interview! I’m making a fusion of disappearing 9 Kaffe Fassett quilt and Kanta embroidery. Although I come from Southern India where Kasuti style of embroidery originates, I don’t know how to do it myself. Someday maybe. Thank you for this one Karen, love it ❤

Thank you for this great video. I got Ekta's book for Christmas 2024. It has been such an interesting read. It has made me realise how many techniques have been used and shared in quilting and embroidery around the world.
