Tohru Honda is the main protagonist of the Fruits Basket series. She is the only daughter to the late Kyoko and Katsuya Honda. Tohru is a student at Kaibara Municipal High School. She loves to cook, describes herself as an excellent housekeeper, and has an after-school job as an office janitor to pay her tuition fees to avoid being a burden to her relatives. She is depicted as a polite, optimistic, independent, extremely kind, and selfless person with a nurturing personality. Following her mother's death which left her orphaned, Tohru begins living with Shigure, Yuki, and Kyo Sohma due to accidentally setting up a tent on their property, and later being hired as their landlady. She later learns that thirteen members of the Sohma family are cursed, as they turn into animals of the Chinese Zodiac if they are embraced by anyone of the opposite sex or when their bodies come under a great deal of stress. As the series progresses, Tohru meets and befriends the rest of the zodiac and the family's mysterious head, Akito Sohma, and resolves to break the curse that burdens them. Only later does she admit that she wants to free Kyo most of all. In Fruits Basket Another, she is married to Kyo and the mother of three children, with her oldest son Hajime Sohma acting as one of the main characters.

Which characters should we cover next?

She is genuinely one of the best protagonists in fiction, and is the perfect example of how to write a "nice character." She's so inspiring, but she also has so much depth, and watching her grow throughout the series is so satisfying. I'm really happy she's getting the recognition she deserves.

“Did u guys cry while watching fruits basket” as if I haven’t cried every single day since it ended

Tohru is a character that I look up to, because she shows that sometimes all you need to help someone out of a bad situation is to simply show them that you care about them.

Toru's crying moves the whole plot more than any character

I was puzzled by the name of this anime so I watched the first season. It started out like a goofy comedy, but really got dramatic over time. That was some great writing. Another story that ended well, and I hope they leave it be.

"Watch fruits basket, it'll be fun" they said....

this shit had me depressed for like two weeks

I love how they didn't make Tohru 'entirely perfect'. Sure, she was super nice, but she wasn't perfect. She hated his dad even though she knew it wasn't his fault that he died. She blamed him (partly true) for making her mom really sad (to the point of doing suicide(?)). She also copied his way of talking to make her mom feel like her husband is still around. At first, I really did like her, but somewhere along the lines, I thought that she was just too perfect, and no one in real life has almost no flaws like Tohru. It was impossible for someone like that to exist, that's why when her flaws were starting to show and she even admitted this to Kyo (and also what she said to Akito in the hospital), I loved her character even more.

One of the best Shojo protagonists of all time.

Just clearing things.. in the manga it was yuki and tohru's bestfriends who forbiden kyo to visit tohru.. they said it is better is they meet when tohru is fully recovered..

@prowlandsasuke 5 years ago

Okay but no one seems to mention how brave tohru. Many times has she thrown herself into danger just to save her friends. Saving ari from gang members, pushing Akito away from yuki.

The reaction of Kyo, Arisa and Hana when Tohru ran is still one of my favorites in the show. It showed 3 different questions in their faces. Hana saying "Really?!", Arisa saying "What happened?" and Kyo was "Why!?"

Should also be mentioned that this is based on the anime adaption. There is a sequel series “Fruits Basket Another” that follows Tohru and Kyo’s child Hajime Sohma and they also have two unnamed children.

The ending made me cry when they got to old age just reminding me I was 8 years or 9 when first saw first basket and finally remake anime . Now I am 24 years old . I am truly my mortality. I remember I wanted to be Tobru and my first crush was Kyo . And I truly love this manga .

I'm so glad she got the happy ending she deserves since she's done so much to the sohma family and help them love themselves and fight to be happy while thoru overtime is slowly accepting peoples help around her bcuz her kindness paid off.
