I am so glad you mentioned the news anchor! What a performance that was!!! Absolutely incredible!

I definitely agree that it would've been fun to see more of the "heist" part of initially stealing that data in the first act. Honestly what I think would tie it all together the best is if the film opened with Margaret and led up to her incident on TV, and then have seeing that newscast cause Hugo and Danny to put their plan into motion. As the movie currently stands, it just seems a bit odd why Hugo was already building her house prior to that incident. It didn't really seem like he had any kind of operation underway to get her there before that point, and I didn't really get the impression that he even knew for sure who or where she was as an adult, so tweaking that aspect of the beginning would make the Margaret and the Danny/Hugo plot lines feel more cohesive in my opinion.

It would have been more interesting if there was some type of sacrifice inherent in leaking the information. Something like revealing military info that would endanger military members (which I vaguely recall was an aspect of a real high profile) since the story was set in a pseudo preWW3 setting

Ryan I care 😂😂 more Blockbuster reviews please 🙏

I gave it a 5/10 the bad outweigh the good for me

I can't believe they already spoiled some stuff ON THE POSTERS)))

You guys are adorable. I'll visit this account again.

Thanks for rambling! You guys always have great perspectives and respectful pushback in your dialogue. Keep the blockbuster reviews rolling.

Also, I thought that Firth giving up was more in response to the significance of Hewson’s character being the one to perform sort of a minor miracle. As I recall, his character is written as a fallen person who was also once quite religious.

New subscriber, just found you on the Invite review! Love your reviews! I just gotta know where are you located in this video? CA? It looks amazingly beautiful! Wish we had a spot like that outside our theaters! Btw it's refreshing to hear you guys 'rambling' because clearly you love cinema. Cheers!

i walked at the theatre door

This was a good video! Thanks for doing this. Happy to see you both more often. (Also, Yvette is aging well if she remembers watching 9/11 unfold on TV that clearly!)

Great review

Love the review, I lean towards Ryan's assessment more (even though I also rate it 8/10 like Yvette, or a 4/5 on Letterboxd). A lot of stuff here work individually but they don't come well together enough for me as a whole, basically it made me feel just whelmed. Not underwhelmed, but there weren't anything big to really gush over.

Also, that news anchor actor Courtney Grace, apparently she was a reporter before becoming an actor so she really got the reporter voice/mannerisms down pat, it's something very specific to news reporting that I see a lot of actors playing reporters don't really capture well. And when she's trying to hold herself together while reporting on all the disclosures, gosh she's really so moving. Honestly I'd give her an Oscar nomination for that.

Speaking of Oscar chances, I'd have Emily Blunt get a (best actress? she's a co-lead with Josh, right?) nomination only if all other movies coming out the rest of the year are all duds. She's good in her role, but certainly there's lots more performances ahead that will take her place.

I liked both your reviews.  I was looking  foward to seeing the movie, but now I probably won't.  I like a sci-fi movie that has a lot of impact(!) to it, but virtually most critics seem to feel "bla" about the whole movie.  No, not for me.

if Emily Blunt's character has that alien tech all along, she could have solved the the problem at the time i kept looking at my watch.

I agree with a lot of your takes. There was plenty to like in concepts, but a lot I didn’t like in execution, in large part due to the screenplay. And Josh is a fantastic actor, but his character just absolutely sucked. I got nothing from him. It was a drag switching from Blunt back over to him. I hated it every time.

Listen, leaving aside all the plot holes of the movie this is opinion: I saw this today. The movie should have ended when Emily's character raises the device that "wasn't supposed to work as a magic wand but then it does" and uses it to turns the electricity back on in the studio, looks at the camera and says  to the cameraman something like "Ok, Cooper..."  and fade to black. Let the audience imagine the rest without spoon-feed them. That's where someone like Nolan would have stopped the movie. I hated all the rest. It ruined what I thought was a solid 1st and 2nd act. Sometimes, showing less and leaving it open to imagination is better.

I actually really loved this film. It actually felt like a Steven Spielberg movie instead of a generic studio product that most movies feel like nowadays. I was really amazed at the blocking and camera work here, along with John Williams’s score and Emily Blunt’s phenomenal lead performance (she absolutely needs to get nominated for this).

Williams has a great narrative here (no wins since SCHINDLER’S LIST and a great way to honor an amazing career, topping it off with him becoming the oldest ever Oscar winner (he would be 95 at the time of the coming ceremony)).

Loved it. Better than overrated The Fablemans.

Stupid film.  2 hrs of dumb chase scenes by dumb characters with no arc or motivation.  Stupid alien at the end and the hero is… NBC?? C’mon.
