What started off as a dry but overcast morning turned into a downpour as I walked along the Mersey estuary towards Spike Island. Nowhere to shelter so had to brave the rain, but as my mum used to say "you won't melt" By the time I reached Spike Island I was dripping so, I went into the little cafe and had a brew and a bacon on toast; lovely!
So, the return leg had to be done. Mind you it had stopped raining with just the odd little shower and by the time I got back to Pickerings Pasture where I had parked my car; I was dry. A lovely 5 mile walk taking in some of the wonders of Widnes. The Railway bridge which was officially opened on the 21st May 1868 but started taking regular railway traffic a few months later. The Silver Jubilee bridge which opened in 1961 and the amazing New Mersey Gateway which opened in 2017 and the end of the Sankey Canal, Britains first Industrial canal which was used to transport coal from the St Helens pits and then onto Liverpool.
A great walk with wonderful views across the River Mersey.
