As a Penangite, what you said is completely accurate

I was in Penang as a young man in 1990. Coming from a small village in Northern Ireland, it was a very pleasant culture shock. Even the rain was warm 😂

Arrived 8 months ago, we love it.  Retired and wouldn’t want to leave.

We walk down to Gurney Drive.  We don’t drive - if we need Butterworth we go by ferry.

Our condo is high up no mosquitos, no lizards, we just use fans but not aircon.

Very safe, we feel very much welcomed!

As someone who used to live in Penang, the biggest problems for me werre the heat and the traffic jams. The heat was so brutal that I put off going out to buy my preferred tobacco for so long that I actually ended up quitting smoking. Going on 16 years this Nov. I recently visited Penang again in 2026. The island seems richer. A lot of nice cars now. And the traffic is even heavier. The long red lights is on a motorbike is brutal as ever. To me it's an island, without offering an island living lifestyle. It's more hectic than KL

Thanks for the run down and honesty! There's no fast track for a popular YT channel in the niche you're in but good luck!

I have been many short trips to Penang and what I always looking forward to, is the FOOD!!!! INCREDIBLE!!!!🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩 I have planned to stay 1 month soon! Going to Penang after being in Thailand for many months is like a dream! Traffic?? Lol! Try Koh Samui or Bangoko or the Thai highways!! I am always on a motorbike, so I never vory....😃😃

Coming from jakarta, your cons still looks like a paradise to me 😁, penang definitely on my bucket list

I visited Penang recently, and it was wonderful.  Living there seems to offer a high quality of life with a low cost of living, amazing street food, and a relaxed pace.  The island is safe, culturally rich, has beautiful beaches, and a welcoming expat community.  It seems ideal for retirees and expats, though traffic can get heavy, and the humidity is quite high.  Overall, it feels like a really appealing place to live or spend some time 😅

Getting around by bicycle is a great way to get around Georgetown/Penang...worth a mention

I live in KL and Penang.
Penang is an industrial island. Go to the south and east of the island and it is high density housing and factories.
The beaches are second rate. Look out for jellyfish. I would not swim at them.
The food is fine, like a lot of Malaysia.

I’m 188 cm tall. While walking long the 5-foot way I need to both watch for the regular steps up or down at every change of property line. Also need to watch for shrines, power meters, signs, or anything else I might strike with my head.

When I stayed in Penang I would cook at home everyday using various grocery stores around. I especially liked  going to the small natural goods store Fresh Choicez where they had very good quality eggs as well as meats and other specialty items. Fresh Choicez is a small grocery store next to Mercato Supermarket at Island Plaza. I I have the impression that the specific areas around the upscale shopping district and Penang is a a sort of subdued era that’s actually posssibly a financial hub for both local and outside investors. I get the feeling that a lot of outside mainland investments have taken place overtime but this is hard to know as an outsider. For nicest beach I noticed was Bantu Ferringhi beach which is fairly long and slants down nicely towards the shoreline. It’s just a little challenging o arrive at the beach with the one coastal road from Georgetown that makes one always worried about dealing with trafffic to and from.

I love Penang. Feels like home after years now.
Yes I wish there would be a nice beach for swimming. I miss that. And walking? I can't really agree with you. Depends also where and how far you want to walk. Sidewalks suddenly end, rarely traffic lights for pedestrian to cross.
About the food 50/50. I mostly cook at home, especially as I got recently diagnosed with diabetes and they have more unhealthy food than healthy one avaliable.. But well, Penang is still so lovely and I agree with you on the rest, especially also the people.

I'm Penangite and now like my age as Senior Citizen I enjoy free ride of the public transport and allowance given by Government 1 year RM1400, free Medical, Medicine, everyday I spend my time idling, find  good food, exercise, food is cheap I can find RM1. 50 nasi lemak, RM2 economy fried beehooon mee. My life in Penang is so much more relaxing and chilled. 😎

I love Penang!! I love penang island!

Traffic - metro lrt mutiara is On The Way now.

I retired to Penang 5 years ago and I agree with your summation of the pros and cons. Being a retiree, who doesn't need beaches and can drive around outside the rush hours, Penang is the perfect place for me. You say it's expensive but that's all relative. I moved here after 21 years in Singapore and trust me, Penang is very cheap in comparison! Try staying in Singapore for a week and will definitely start calling Penang 'cheap'.

Been to Penang 4 times, around 4 weeks all up. I miss it heaps and would totally live there.

Kuala Lumpur city  feels oppressive and stressful due to dense high‑rise buildings, heat and humidity, heavy traffic, noise, poor walkability, overcrowding, and a lack of open green spaces at street level.

I liked Ipoh as a break from Georgetown and KL and a big part of the attraction was the novelty of seeing very few other Ang Mo. Don't know if I could live there but I like the food.
