The Bizarre Life of Meat Loaf

While his name may conjure up visions of a favorite family meal, the reality of being Meat Loaf was not always so easy to swallow. He was an incredibly troubled star who lived with a moniker that was a constant reminder of cruel taunts from school chums and from a dad who tragically tried to end his son’s life. But Meat Loaf poured all his childhood trauma into explosive tunes that were as operatic as they were Rock & Roll. But then one day he faced a challenge he could not have seen coming.

Funny story: Let me start off by saying that my Dad was in his late 60s at the time, a WWII veteran, and had never heard of Meat Loaf. In the 1980s, my father worked at the Ashworth Hotel in Hampton Beach, NH. The clerk at the front desk asked my father to bring up a few suitcases to a certain room where one of their guests was staying. A heavyset man with long hair answered the door. Thanked my Dad for bringing up the suitcases, shook his hand — gave him a tip--then introduced himself as Meat Loaf. My father said, "Nice meeting you." "If you are a Meat Loaf, then I'm a Fruitcake." With that, Meat Loaf quickly ended the conversation and closed the door. It wasn't until much later that my Dad found out he was a famous Rock N' Roll singer.

Marvin was someone I was honored to call a friend. Meatloaf was a good person with a big heart. We lost him to COVID. I just miss my friend. 😢.

I grew up with his music and I still can’t get past he’s no longer with us. He was a big man with the voice of an angel.

The Bat Out of Hell albums, are some, of the, greatest albums, Meat Loaf, ever did. Meat is awesome. Rest in peace, Meat Loaf.

Not all of us from the Chicago area were hating on Meatloaf back then. He got a lot of love from the south suburbs back in '77.

He would've been completely blown away with all the tributes to him after he passed. He was truly amazing.

Grew up listening to him but in the 1990s as an adult in Florida I learnt to appreciate him. He was versatile and larger than life. I loved that about him. Hearing all he had done especially at the end makes me admire him. Thank you for sharing what an amazing soul to live so out loud.

My grandmother who was in her 70s LOVED Meat Loaf. I lived with her for a small period of time and I would hear Bat Out Of Hell coming from the kitchen. I would walk into the kitchen and see my grandma having a glass of wine, WITH ice, playing solitaire, just chilling out. 🤣
God, I miss her.
