Hungry Horse, Montana, and the nearby dam get their name from two freight horses, Tex and Jerry, who survived a harsh winter in 1900-1901 after getting lost from their logging sled in the area. These horses were nicknamed the "mighty hungry horses" because of their struggle to find food in the severe conditions, and the name was later applied to the area where the Hungry Horse Dam was built

The Legend of Tex and Jerry
• The Disappearance: During a brutal Montana winter along the South Fork of the Flathead River, the two logging horses broke away from their sled and wandered into the dense wilderness.
• The Survival: After nearly a month trapped belly-deep in snowdrifts, handlers finally located the pair. They were severely emaciated, skinny as lodgepole pines, and surviving on native brush.
• The Recovery: Local loggers nursed them back to health, affectionately nicknaming them the “Mighty Hungry Horses”. Both horses fully recovered and later went on to pull fire wagons and mercantile carts in nearby Kalispell.
