The new Armstrong X-Wing is here… and this feels like one of the biggest shifts we’ve seen from Armstrong in a long time.
For years, Armstrong wings have built a reputation around usability, wave riding, stability, and all-round performance. But where they’ve traditionally sat slightly behind some competitors was in the ultra-light, high-performance material space.
That changes with the new X-Wing.
In this review, I put the Armstrong X-Wing through proper real-world testing across wave riding, freeride sessions, powered conditions, lighter wind, upwind performance testing, manoeuvres, tacks, and overall usability to find out whether this is genuinely the next evolution of the Armstrong lineup… or simply a more premium version of the already excellent XPS.
I cover:
Wave riding & flagging performance
Upwind angle & efficiency
Speed & top-end control
Low-end power & pumping
Boom-only setup & ergonomics
Lightweight materials & stiffness
Tacks, gybes & manoeuvres
Boom connection system
Pack down & travel setup
Real-world dislikes & long-term concerns
Who this wing is actually for
This is not a paid promotion and as always this is a completely independent review based on my personal experience on the water.

Here is the review terms I send to every brand for reviews. Full Disclosure.
Product Review Collaboration – Terms & Transparency
Hi [Name],
Thank you for considering a collaboration with me on a product review for my YouTube channel, Hydro Gav. As my reviews have grown, I now work to clearer terms so expectations are aligned from the start — for both the brand and the audience.
My goal is simple: open, honest reviews that help people choose the right equipment. That means I’ll always share both what I like and what I don’t.
Key terms of collaboration
Editorial independence: You’re providing gear for review, not a guaranteed positive outcome.
Balanced feedback: I will highlight both positives and negatives, based on my “real world” experience.
Respectful approach: My intent is never to “slam” a product — I always try to recognise the effort, design work, and development behind it — but I will be honest so people are properly informed.
No pre-approval: The brand does not get to approve the final edit, script, or conclusions before publishing.
Transparency to viewers: I will clearly disclose the partnership in the video and/or in the description/comments, so the audience understands the context.
If these terms work for you, I’d love to start with this product and build a long-term relationship reviewing future gear — ideally in a way that’s mutually beneficial for your brand and valuable for my viewers.
If you’re happy to proceed, just reply confirming acceptance of the above terms and I’ll send through shipping details and proposed publishing timelines.
