"People in possession of lost media aren't going to be dodgy about it" Backyardigans wiki admins hoarding the Me and my Friends pilot:

I think my favorite instance of fake Lost Media (which wasn’t purposefully faked) was “That Creepy Farming Game”, where someone was half asleep while listening to a Vinesauce video and thought the game Joel was describing was something they actually played

Shoutout to the Evil Farming Game that eventually looped around to the guy who made the original post finding the actual stream clip that implanted the false memory of that game

I mean... A Day with SpongeBob wasn't a total disappointment, right? There was no movie at the end of the day, but we ultimately did solve the mystery, as opposed to other searches that are still ongoing.

The first time I saw someone cover "Kekroc" and seeing the logo my immediate thought was "wait, people don't actually believe this is real, right?"
Yeah, like the lost game that was first discussed on 4chan and has kek in the name is a real lost title lol

there's one thing about kekcroc that's always bothered me -
the fangames people made about him are based on the boxart instead of the screenshots on the box.
i thought we all knew that the boxart of games in the 90s are NEVER a one-to-one match to the actual gameplay

For Kekcrock, I didn't believe it for a minute simply because the part of the name "kek" being such a HUGE redflag of it being fake. It's a very, very common synonym for "lol" on 4chan. I see it like daily, this is exactly the kind of fake name someone would make.

im just happy Mean Girls DS turned out to be legit

Not a hoax but I remember people genuinely believing the Mario Party DS Anti Piracy Screen was real

I don't know if it counts, but my favorite media hoax was when the SM64 community was flabbergasted at this convincing screenshot of Mario in a gray room with Bowser. Some people thought it was a beta room, some a secret debug area, and some an undiscovered secret level. The truth? It was a photoshop done by Chris O'Neill as a kid and paraded around his school for fun.

Crazy how people fell for the terrible Times New Roman Nickelodeon Ident @2:06 . The brand guide from around 1994 states the typeface has to be "Balloon Bold" or sans-serif.

It's still crazy to me that people still took the interview with the supposed "creator" of A Day With SpongeBob seriously, like he offhandedly said something like "oh well the film could eventually be made through crowdfunding" and then people started expecting a major crowdfunding campaign to launch after that, like no you idiots he's bullshitting you so y'all will stop bothering him lol

Cmon man, it had KEK in the title

Part of the reason the hoaxes work is that people don't know or don't remember what media on VHS looked like. Or media from that era in general.

The thing that always got me about Go For a Punch is that one of the descriptions that’s meant to be like, so specific and scary you have to believe it, is that the girls were clawing out their necks with their fingernails. But… that’s from Higurashi. An actually existent piece of media, popular amongst horror anime nerds but just niche enough to the general populous that people might not realize it. But that’s just straight up stolen from Higurashi. Could never believe in it because of that LOL

The part I remember the most of the A Day with SpongeBob SquarePants search was that time a guy on 4chan claimed that he found the Reagal Film headquarters that was apparently in the upper floors of a mall and he began posting live as he was trying to go past security MGS-style to get in the president office and ask them about the movie.

Even tho "A day with spongebob" ended up being hoax, it deffinetly is what got many into the world of Lost Media

I find it funny that on the siivagunner channel during the lost media event they dedicated a whole rip to kekrock and the song was lssq ending theme. And the guy who even made it commented on it.

Here's a fun story, a friend of mine told me about Kekcroc and how it's a fake game but sometime later he sent me a ROM called Kekcroc. However, since he had already told me it's a fake game I didn't trust ROM, so I renamed the ROM to make it look like a Sonic 3 and Knuckles ROM hack and sent it back.

Turns out it was a Rick Roll, my friend was not happy.
