It seems to me that Fear the Walking Dead should have focused specifically on the first days of the outbreak—after all, that’s what everyone was anticipating—but we were only shown glimpses of the onset of the apocalypse. We didn't see mass panic, the collapse of society, or the breakdown of governing structures; instead, the show just bounced us from one character to another, effectively killing off any interest in the series.

The way they abandoned the Tobias storyline and started rushing the timeline was so disappointing. Fear was supposed to focus on the beginning. Then a few episodes in there's a 3 or 4 month timejump.

Honestly I think Fear the walking dead should of only focused on the early days.

The fact that the French researchers were talking about variants not seen by the US suggests either a higher rate of mutation or near the original outbreak scene. It was likely a test on a variance of another disease, to help fight that disease, however it was given to low a Biohazard level and it infected the researchers.

bit of a backstory: i live in toronto, so snowstorms are a thing. problem was the only people that were expected to be in office during a snowstorm were CS and the warehouse. everyone else got a snow day. there's not much you can do if you work in a warehouse when you have to ship orders to customers and to stores, but you could definitely answer phones and emails from home, so my first winter at the job i set up remote capability.

cut to 3 years later. it was the friday before i was scheduled to go on vacation for two weeks in early march. my coworker stopped by my desk before he left and asked "do you mind if i work from home while you're away?". i told him it would look bad if our office was empty for two weeks, and mentioned i didn't want everyone thinking he was only working from home because i wasn't there.

i asked him why he wanted to. he proceeds to tell me he doesn't feel comfortable taking public transit during rush hour anymore if he doesn't have to, and that it was lucky i scheduled my vacation when i did because i got to spend the next 2 weeks at home.

he wasn't a conspiracy nut, or a hypochondriac, so i had no idea what the hell he was talking about. he then tells me he'd been reading a bunch of stuff about a virus that was spreading out of wuhan. the news isn't talking about it too much, just that a guy had tested positive back in january, and that a lot of other people have gotten it since then. across canada, the US, all over the world.

i shrugged it off. we'd worked from home a bunch already and there was literally no reason why either of us couldn't work from home on a full time basis outside of upper management being like "uhmm.. excuse me you're paid to work IN OFFICE". i told him that sunday night, he should send me an email CC'd to my boss saying he "threw out his back" and i'd respond akin to "no worries, you can work from home. feel better!" to cover our asses.

the friday before i'm supposed to return back i get a call from HR. "sorry for calling you on vacation, but i REALLY need you to check your email". it's a company contingency plan saying that the government of canada will be most likely be declaring state of emergency due to the rapid outbreak of the virus, and management will be tasked with shifting operations to work from home for the foreseeable future, to reduce transmission, starting monday. official closures and stay at home orders were issued by the government on wednesday.

my coworker was treating COVID 19 seriously 3 weeks before anyone else did.

that's the vibe i got from tobias. he had access to the same mainstream news reports everyone else did. he just looked a bit closer, started connecting the dots earlier and reached a conclusion before anyone else, just like my coworker did about COVID.

i'd since quit the job but stayed in contact with the dude on social media. he didn't panic about monkeypox, ebola, etc. but if i ever see him stress about something like that again i'm heading for the hills man lol.

I would also say the morgue people or some law enforcement could theoretically know about the outbreak. Like they noticed that the people who are not responding or like seeing them eat other people or like seemingly dead then rose could rose suspicions among law enforcement and also the morticians

Regarding the paramedic stitching up the bite; this does not automatically mean they are misinformed (though I do think this scene is there to imply this in universe). In real life, this is EXACTLY what you would do as a medical professional, even if you have never seen anyone with a bite survive it. You treat the best you can to give the patient a fighting chance, even if there is little to no chance they will actually make it. You only EVER give up on anyone once it is beyond absolutely certain they are dead, and even then you might still take some life saving measures if there remains even a sliver of doubt. This is why I personally think all medical personel is completely doomed in an outbreak like this, we are trained to keep going even if there is seemingly no chance of savng them.

Dude, I cannot express my sheer disappointment with how the first season of Fear turned out. I was so excited to see what we had essentially missed out on with Rick. My thought was that Fear was going to be a descent into the beginnings of the zombie apocalypse. In the first episode, we got that. Then the military shows up and it says “X weeks later,” of whatever and society has already collapsed and all the wind got sucked out of my sails. The beginning was the whole point of the show and they skipped it again!

Here are two things I see:
1. Ideological reasons for scientists and medics keeping quiet. High-ranking doctors would not want to admit they believed in 'spiritual woo-woo' like the undead, not only to save face themselves, but because of the threat that anything that even slightly smelled of the supernatural would pose to a materialist, empiricist worldview. Nurses wouldn't be told more than they 'needed' to know.

2. It didn't just spread through bites. If it was in the blood and saliva of the infected, it was probably in...well, other fluids, too. Sex, shared needles. If the water supply got infected and the virus had any staying power in water, it would multiply the effect. Blood banks and organ donation would be vectors, too. War dead. Gang violence. The poor dying uncounted by the census.

Seeing all those minor characters makes me think they should, at least, bring one back in current day (like they could have done with Morales). Imagine what could happen if Maddison randomly met Tobias in a settlement? I think the Showrunner has confirmed that the character is still alive.

I also find it strange that after Tobias was attacked by a zombie on that school staircase, he somehow left his food cart in the hallway; it seems to me that the show's creators are hinting that he might have been bitten.

You never actually see a military response. You see a National Guard response.  You do see what happened on the USS Pennsylvania, but not the whole Navy.

The scenes of PADRE before it became the PADRE in Fear are closer to what a military response would be, but not exactly. They were in a secure position that they reinforced before starting to expand the rebuilding efforts.

Every regular military base would have fortified their defenses first. They would have pushed massive dirt piles up against the fences and turned the whole base into one big fire base. Ships at sea would be recalled to their home ports to aid in fortification and recovery.

The vast majority of the military is 18-33 years old. That would mean that heart attacks and the like would be highly unusual. Their first “safe zones” would have been the bases and then moving out from those block by block.

You saw doctors using a nail gun on people who died in Fear, so the knowledge of head shots would have been there already. Every soldier on the fences would have been instructed to aim for the head.

Those fences were not reinforced. The military has dozens of methods of reinforcing fences, even down to sending a company out with shovels to pile up dirt and dig trenches. One infantry company can dig a mile of trenches in about four hours, with one platoon covering. Seabees and combat engineers would use heavy equipment to excavate massive trenches, piling the dirt up on the inside  of it.  Two rows of J-rails with 5’ of dirt piled up between them weigh more than six tons, without the J-rails.

They should have gone to San Diego in Fear. The bases there were probably like fortresses.

I do know most people are tired of all the spin offs, but if we could get another one I would love to explore the the conferences and the early cases of it. Where you get to see governments talk, people panic and see what led to Monument Day. What happened to the governments and certain people like the French Scientists would be so cool to me

Medical professionals not being told information reminds me of the same scenario in TLOU. Staff kept putting people in the hospital basement for treatment not knowing what they really have. You probably know what happened next.
