Remember ...たい is an adjective - not a verb
アニメが好きです (I like anime) directly means "anime is liked" as it is an adjective hence が.
So think of 'want to' as "being wanted" or similar as it is an adjective and not a verb. This is why を is not always used. を is often for verbs. E.g. テレビを見る (I watch tv)
