Together with Olga Makarova, a researcher at the Sysert Museum of Local History, we stroll through the historic center of Sysert—a classic Ural factory town, the birthplace of writer Pavel Bazhov, and a popular tourist destination.
You'll see breathtaking summer panoramas of the city, Sysert Pond, the confluence of the Sysert and Chernaya rivers, and Sysert's main landmarks from a bird's eye view!
You'll see the Sysertsky Pond dam, ancient locks, and the later Soviet architecture of the hydroelectric complex. You'll admire the monumental red-brick building of the former blast furnace shop of the Sysertsky Plant from all sides. You'll examine in detail the monument to Alexei Turchaninov, the first owner of the Sysertsky Plants. You'll climb Bessonova Hill and see a cast-iron cross. You'll explore the former Turchaninov-Solomirsky estate and admire the surviving buildings. You'll stroll through the square in front of the grand Simeon-Anninsky Church and explore all its monuments, including a bust of the writer Pavel Bazhov. You'll also admire the former main office building of the Sysertsky Plant and examine its curious historical plaques.
You'll learn how the name of the city of Sysert is translated, who founded it and when, who was the first owner of the Sysert plant and why an overpass was built there, why Turchaninov received nobility and what bird is depicted on his coat of arms, why Sysert workers defended the plant during the war with Yemelyan Pugachev, what is special about the 19th-century Sysert orphanage, where Pavel Bazhov was baptized, and what was housed in the Church of Simeon and Anna during the Soviet era.
