Today we look at where both the term 'battle cruiser' and the ships themselves came from, and just how little the various nations that built them actually agreed over their mission profiles!

Everyone ask "What is Battlecruiser?" Never "How is Battlecruiser?"

A Battlecruiser? Easy. A battlecruiser is a cruiser that looked at a battleship and said: “I can do that. Probably.”

FYI, America just called: “don’t you dare drag our Alaska in.”

Drach, I have a theory as to why the Alaska-class keeps getting called "battlecruisers" despite your and the US Navy's best efforts. The 1946 edition of Jane's Fighting Ships, a quick and popular go-to reference for many years and many reprints, calls them battlecruisers!
Likewise, the same edition calls the Kongo-class "battleships", not "battlecruisers".

Battlecruisers were a fantastic idea. Fast enough and powerful enough to sweep the seas of anything short of a battleship. But idiot Admirals put them up against full blown battleships. The one thing they can't do.
