How to Retrieve the Last Trip Code (works for Square D and Eaton):
1.) Turn the breaker on and ensure there is no fault causing immediate trip. If there is, then electrician must remove the home run wires from the breaker. If breaker trips immediately with no wires attached, then breaker is bad.
2.) Turn the breaker off.
3.) Hold down the "TEST" button, and turn the breaker ON while TEST is being held.
4.) Observe the reported "Last Trip Code" (see below). Square D uses a limited number of trip codes based on "time before breaker trips", whereas Eaton has a much better "flash code" system.
Square D Trip Codes:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
https://www.se.com/us/en/faqs/FA125415/
Trips Instantly (less than 1 second): Fault to ground; includes:
Arcing to ground
Shared neutral
Grounded neutral
Ground fault
Trips at 2.0 seconds: Arc fault; includes:
Parallel arc fault
Series arc fault
Trips at 5.0 seconds: Procedure complete; includes:
No Fault
Thermal overload
Short circuit
Eaton Trip Codes are much more descriptive:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
https://knowledgehub.eaton.com/s/arti...
0 Flashes: No fault in memory, or normal short circuit, or thermal overload.
1 Flash: Series Arc Fault (same "leg": loose screw, loose wirenut, broken wire, etc)
2 Flashes: Parallel Arc Fault (between two "legs": screw in wire, nicked insulation, etc)
3 Flashes: Short Delay - alternate short circuit indication
4 Flashes: Overvoltage - more than 160V phase to neutral - check main feeder connections, commonly caused by bad main neutral.
5 Flashes: Ground Fault - by far the most common. Shared neutral, hot or neutral touching ground, screw through wire, water intrusion, candelabra socket cover touching lamp screw shell, etc.
6 Flashes: Breaker Self-Test Failure - needs replacement.
