Storm-damaged and blown-down trees can hold a tremendous amount of tension. Before making the first cut, it’s important to slow down, read the tree, and understand how it may react when that tension is released.
In this video, I’m clearing a blowdown from a forest road and demonstrating an axle cut, a technique I use when working with trees under tension. I walk through how I identify tension and compression and plan my cuts before putting the saw into the tree.
Blowdowns can be unpredictable, and every situation is different. This video is intended to show how I approach the problem in the field—not as a substitute for proper chainsaw training and experience.
