Why is it that the more rigorous and brilliant an answer is, the further it may be from the truth? The *Vimalakirti Sutra*, in its chapter on entering the non-dualistic Dharma, arranges for thirty-one Bodhisattvas, Manjushri Bodhisattva, and Vimalakirti to respond to the same question in turn, revealing layer by layer the boundaries of language and thought.
This episode dismantles the oppositions of birth and death, self and what belongs to self, defilement and purity, good and evil, birth and death and Nirvana, summarizing three paths to entering the non-dualistic Dharma: seeing emptiness in both sides from the essence, seeing that distinctions are created by labels from cognition, and seeing that the mind no longer oscillates between extremes from practice. Then, using Gödel's incompleteness theorems and formal systems as analogies, it understands the three-tiered steps constituted by the thirty-one linguistic answers, Manjushri's negation of language, and Vimalakirti's "silence." You will see that non-duality is not about eliminating one side, but about seeing through the mechanism that creates opposition; sometimes what traps us is not the problem, but the analytical tool that constantly reinforces binary choices.
When you become increasingly entangled with analysis, have you ever tried taking a step back and looking at what the analysis itself is doing to you? Feel free to leave a comment sharing your experiences. You're also welcome to subscribe and like this post to share this reflection on the *Vimalakirti Sutra*, the non-dualistic path, and the boundaries of language with a wider audience. I'm Wang Lijie, see you next time.
