Both models shared some production steps at the Karmann coachbuilding plant in Osnabrück, West Germany, where the bodies were manufactured, assembled, and painted. However, final assembly differed due to the joint Porsche-Volkswagen project:
• The four-cylinder 914/4 was fully completed at Karmann in Osnabrück, including engine installation (using Volkswagen-sourced Type 4 flat-four engines), making it a complete “in-house” production there.
• The six-cylinder 914/6 had its body (rolling chassis) built and painted at Karmann, but then shipped to Porsche’s main factory in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen for final assembly. This included installing the Porsche flat-six engine (from the 911 T), drivetrain, suspension, and other Porsche-specific components.
This split occurred because the 914/6 used more Porsche-derived parts (like the engine, brakes, and wheels from the 911), while the 914/4 relied heavily on Volkswagen components. Production of the 914/6 was much lower (around 3,300–3,360 units) compared to the 914/4 (over 115,000 units), which also influenced the separate handling.
