That's why it's so rare to see people with big smiles or strong gestures in old portraits - not just because it would be exhausting to hold those for as long as it'd take the artist to hash out your form, but because they look frivolous and silly, and in a world where getting a portrait is such a special opportunity, you don't want to squander it by being a weirdo.
With the OCs you drew in that family picture prompt, I think there's nice "scene" potential. While getting the portrait made, Gavin's sisters' overprotective tendencies might be heightened by the gravity of having a portrait done. They might prod at every tiny little detail about his outfit and posture because they want to protect the image of him that the portrait will communicate, and that level of scrutiny might be really uncomfortable to him - or he might even feel their insistence on traditional propriety will make the portrait's depiction of him turn out less like himself, leaving a part of him lost to time? That's a little heavy if they're getting this done as kids, though. Just an idea.
